Position Overview

The joint venture between SNC-Lavalin and Aecon has been awarded a contract with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to carry out the Darlington Retube and Feeder Replacement (RFR) project. The project involves refurbishment of all four reactors at the Darlington Generating Station and consists of two phases – a Definition Phase and an Execution Phase. The Definition Phase includes the construction of a full-scale reactor mock-up to simulate key elements of the refurbishment work, and the development, procurement and testing of specialized tooling required for the project. The Execution Phase involves refurbishment of the reactor cores using the tools and methods that were developed and tested during the Definition Phase.


The Trade Superintendent will assist in the supervision, coordination and execution of construction activities on the RFR project for multiple scopes of work in compliance with the contract and the job cost estimate and ensures all the work is completed safely to acceptable standards of quality and workmanship. They are accountable for direct execution of the construction work in their scope. While on shift they report to the Area Manager and CanAtom Shift Supervisor. Functionally the Superintendent reports to the Construction Manager.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the General Foreperson and Foreperson executing work on six shift
  • Responsible for the supervision of DFL, including ensuring DFL assigned to work are suitable and qualified for the work
  • To work with the Area Manager in a collaborative manner to drive construction  readiness for each scope of work  in compliance with CanAtom’s T-40 readiness process
  • Ensuring efficient timing of onboarding of DFL and that field issues are resolved quickly and in the best interest of the project.
  • Review project master schedule and ensure work planning.
  • Ensure alignment and partnering with OPG Construction Oversight 
  • Responsibility for the implementation and enforcement of safety, quality and human performance programs
  • Ensures that CanAtom and OPG policies and project procedures are being adhered to and followed by project personnel
  • Drive construction readiness and manage risk, develop recovery strategies when project schedule or budget are in jeopardy in collaboration with the Area Manager during planning.  Escalate all issues on shift to CSS. Any production issues exceeding 30 minutes to Area Manager while keeping CSS in the loop on all discussion and resolutions
  • Accountable for collaborating with Area Manager on work planning including methods of construction, manpower levels, materials, tools & equipment, rentals and work schedules
  • Assume responsibility for productivity of direct hire trade labour and subcontractors, efficient use of materials and tools & equipment and contractual performance of the project
  • Understanding and support of EPSCA trade agreements and the Nuclear Project Agreement.
  • Application of home company discipline policies and appropriate escalation of labour performance concerns to the Construction Manager.
  • Appropriate escalation of schedule, quality and cost issues to Area Manager
  • Ensure trades personnel complete all necessary training in areas of safety, quality assurance, technical qualifications, equipment operation and owner specified requirements, including bio-assay and whole-body count
  • Ensure project is constructed and executed in compliance with drawings, specifications, Comprehensive Work Packages (CWPs), Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) and project schedule and budget
  • Ensure project is constructed in accordance with QA Programs and project quality
  • Other duties as required or assigned


Required Knowledge and Experience

  • Minimum of 7 years construction and subcontractor supervision experience
  • 2 years nuclear construction experience is an asset
  • Knowledge of all aspects of construction such as; technology, equipment, methods, trade agreements and jurisdiction, engineering, cost control, scheduling and safety requirements
  • Must understand how to support a positive Nuclear Safety Culture.
  • Experience in managing major refurbishment or complex Nuclear projects
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings, blue prints and specifications
  • Must have a full appreciation of the importance of Quality Assurance Programs and their significance to the nuclear industry
