Under the general supervision of the Director of Proposals & Estimating and/or Bid Managers, the estimator has the responsibility to prepare and deliver compliant and comprehensive construction cost estimates, methodologies, execution plans, projects risks, assumptions, and clarifications for various scopes relating to nuclear / industrial construction projects. The person in this position will be required to develop detailed compilations and summaries of direct construction hours, engage with multiple subcontractors, material suppliers and rental companies and be able to present their results logically and thoroughly to management for approval.
What You'll Do Here
- Work effectively in a team environment and support other estimators and mangers in the department
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
- Develop strategies and scope breakdown structures to support the estimate development process
- Support the Bid Manager throughout the entire duration of the proposal / estimate development process
- Participation and understanding of both design/build and “build-to-spec” contracts
- Review and interpret project drawings, specifications, lists, and other technical documentation
- Ability to conceptualize construction plans / methodologies that define how to construct and/or install equipment or complete an activity and translate those concepts into realistic estimate summaries.
- Create sketches, drawings and specifications to support the estimating process
- Compile RFIs during and/or after the document reviews
- Responsible for the accurate take-off of quantities preparation of detailed estimates while following company policies and estimating procedures
- Utilize construction estimating software to compile detailed estimate information
- Estimate Preparation - labour hours / headcounts, material costs; tools & equipment costs; scheduling durations; and compile bid packages for subcontractors and/or equipment suppliers
- Analyzes sub-trade quotations, liaison with subcontractors for clarification of issues
- Attend estimate kick-off and approval meetings with management to review estimate details, assumptions, and risk factors
- Determine estimated construction durations for job forecasting and project scheduling
- Attend walkdowns / site visits to understand project scope
- Maintain estimating information to establish historical database references, including information on prices from equipment vendors, material suppliers and/or subcontractors.
- Superior time management with the ability to meet deadlines
What You Bring To The Team
- Minimum 5 years of large capital project estimating experience within the industrial or nuclear construction industries
- Construction Engineering Technologist or Trade Certification or Gold Seal Certificate (Estimating) or equivalent experience
- In eight Estimate software experience is preferred and knowledge of estimating, and take off programs are beneficial (i.e. Excel, OST Pro, Bluebeam, etc.)
- Strong estimating background, preferably on major construction / maintenance projects
- Ability to read and understand drawings
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written
- Have good attention to detail, responsible attitude, and leadership qualities and be self-sufficient
- Good knowledge of subcontracting processes
- Understanding of unionized trade agreements
- Ability to work in a multi-tasking and multi-disciplined team environment
