What is the Opportunity?
Reporting to the Locates Supervisor, the Utility and Private Utility Locator/ Damage Prevention Technician will be responsible for performing utility locates for gas, telephone, water, hydro and telecom. Our Technicians are trained to ensure utilities are located to both industry and Aecon standards. Locates are self-performed for Aecon crews – leading the industry with the dedicated locate model. We provide Technicians with cutting-edge technology including digital and sketch free drawing options supported by our Trimble units, top of the line RD 8200 GPS units, new hybrid fleet of cars, and more!
Aecon provides in depth training programs for new Locators or those interested in getting into the industry.
This is a unionized role based in Hamilton, ON. It is a requirement to join the union upon acceptance.
What You’ll Do Here:
- Locate underground utilities accurately using utility mapping systems and electronic locating equipment
- Understand and respond to work requests delegated by Supervisor
- Knowledge of manipulating utility records
- Ability to effectively document utility locates and follow appropriate documentation procedure
- Willingness to work on-call shifts for 24-hour emergency response
- Vital main integrity inspecting
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as required

What you bring to the Team:
- Experience with private locates, pre-eng locates and locates of sewers considered an asset
- Vital Main Integrity experience considered an asset.
- Strong computer skills- MS Excel, MS Word, MS Project
- Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record
- Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills
- Self motivated: ability to work independently on timelines and stay productive under minimal supervision
- Ability to work accurately and problem solve under pressure
- Strong communication skills: ability to interact with customers in a professional manner
- Willingness to work flexible and/or long hours when required to meet deadlines
