Fibre Optic Splicer

Reporting to the Superintendent, the Fibre Optic Splicer will be responsible for performing activities related to connecting, testing, and validating the integrity of new and existing outside plant telecommunication networks. This will be a unionized position. 

 

 Key Responsibilities 

  • Splicing, testing, and troubleshooting of infrastructure, FTTH or customer builds.
  • Daily updates, documentation and reporting on work completed.
  • Completion of daily safety documentation with a focus on accuracy and potential hazards.
  • Inspecting fiber routes and hub sites as preventative maintenance.
  • Strong attention to quality and detail.
  • The ability to read and understand all types of drawings or documents to determine the fibre. counts being used.

 

Required Knowledge and Experience 

  • 2+ years Fibre Optic splicing experience, preferably in the Bell Canada Network.
  • In depth knowledge of OTDR testing to prove high losses and open locations with accuracy.
  • Previous experience with providing power meter results including documentation.
  • Extensive experience using single fibre fibre fusion sets, ribbon fibre splicing, live fibre identifiers, ribboning techniques.
  • Proficient in fibre cable termination with connectors a variety of connector types.
  • Experience with all types of fibre closures such as PLP Armadillo, PLP Dome, PLP coyote Runts and Tyco 400 or 450 series.
  • The understanding of patch panels, pigtails, patch cords and splice boxes.
  • Previous hands on experience with connectorized cables or pigtails using a Corning Unicam or Opti-Snap tool.
  • Experience with live fibre cut overs.
  • Knowledge of work area protection and safe work practices.
  • The ability to read and understand all types of drawings or documents to determine the fibre counts being used.
  • Electrical Safety Awareness.
  • Fall protection.
  • Familiar with working in confined spaces or manholes.
  • Self-motivated with good organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Although most of the work will be in the GTA, a willingness to travel within Canada would be considered an asset.
  • Adaptable to flexible work schedule such as nights when required to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work and communicate with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to problem solve and work independently.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate respectfully with employees, visitors, and customers.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks multiple tasks to ensure customer due dates are met.
  • Valid class G driver’s license with a reasonable driver abstract.
  • An AZ or DZ will be consider an asset.
  • Repetitive movement.
  • Able to perform in a fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Prolonged stationary positions on your feet or sitting position.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding atmosphere including, but is not limited to carry, raise, and climb a ladder, carry, lift, and handle heavy equipment (manhole covers, cable reels).
  • The ability to carry unbalanced loads such as a 28-foot extension ladder.
  • Work aloft off an extension ladder.
  • Stand or sit in awkward positions for an extended period.
  • Not afraid of heights or confined spaces.
  • Must be able to pick out colours and read colour codes.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Strong manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
