Yard & Equipment Superintendent

Purpose of the Position

Under the supervision of the General Superintendent, Canadian Bridge for the Gordie Howe International Bridge project, the Yard and Equipment Superintendent will be responsible for the following:

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervises and assigns the daily activities to mechanics, oilers and helpers.
  • Manages and prioritizes the repair and maintenance of all equipment in Areas.
  • Prioritizes emergency repairs.
  • Trains and mentors the Mechanics/PM Technician in the assigned Areas.
  • Ensures compliance with Equipment Daily Inspection policy.
  • Ensures that appropriate Work Plans are in place and safety regulations adhered to.
  • Requests generation of work orders for warranty issues / damages / equipment issues to the Equipment Engineer
  • Responsible to immediately report equipment damage to the Safety Dept and participates in completing the applicable incident reports.
  • Coordinates/schedules “down” time for preventive and corrective maintenance.
  • Reviews equipment utilization information and coordinates ‘shared’ use with other areas.
  • Reviews “open” work orders on a weekly basis and address repair deficiencies.
  • Supervises and monitors vendor repairs and services.
  • Responsible for machine inspection, fueling, mobilization and demobilization inspections.
  • Responsible to handle minor repairs during shift as required to maintain fleet functionality.
  • Routinely checks that daily inspections are being completed.
  • Interfaces with operators and field foremen on a daily basis regarding inspections and repairs.
  • Manages all on-hire and off-hire inspections for rental equipment.
  • Manages all warranty repairs at dealerships.
  • Manages all undercarriages and life expectancies.
  • Recommends operator rewards for positive behavior.
  • Responsible for monitoring and managing labor and equipment material budget.

Required Knowledge and Experience

  • A minimum of 15 years of equipment maintenance and at least 5 in a leadership role.
  • Ability to lead and evaluate trade performance is essential. 
  • Ability to manage construction staff and multiple subcontractors as needed 
  • Ability to assume responsibility, interface and communicate with others a must.
  • Enthusiasm for challenge and new initiatives are prerequisites
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Sound knowledge of construction techniques, practices and fundamentals
  • Experience with contract and subcontract management
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships and work within a team environment
  • Strong organizational and time management
  • Maintain valid local driver’s license
  • Ability to travel as required
  • Working computer proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
