Aecon’s Major Projects West division is hiring a Construction Manager for our St. Mary’s Interchange Project in Winnipeg, MB. This is an important project for Aecon and the community as it will provide critical infrastructure to a growing city and better access to important economic corridors. The contract is a $100 million design-build contract for the construction of an interchange at Perimeter Highway (PTH 100) and St. Mary’s Road.

 

This position is a fly-in/out opportunity assigned to a 14/7 rotation with LOA provided. 

 

Reporting to the Project Director, the Construction Manager is responsible to provide leadership, supervise and coordinate operations on multiple construction sites and are responsible for the performance of their assigned Superintendents. They are directly responsible for, although not limited to, ensuring the safety of crew members, ensuring the productivity of crew members, following OH&S and Company policies, procedures and guidelines. The Construction Manager is a key participant in the relationship between the company, other contractors, the client and all other project stake holders. The Construction Manager is required to act in a professional manner that will strengthen these relationships in a positive way.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote, lead and execute a Safety-Always culture for all employees, sub-contractors and consultants in compliance with Aecon’s Environmental Health and Safety Program and provincial occupational health and safety legislation.
  • Promote safety in all activities and engage in safe work plan development, hazard assessments, FLRAs and mentorship with crew.
  • Maintain a positive project culture and oversee / mentor the work of junior team members.
  • Track and report project, quality control, resource requirements and customer or employee relations to the General Manager.
  • Oversee multiple job sites and ensure Superintendent compliance with all assignments, project policies and procedures.
  • Drive quality, efficiency and productivity of work crews.
  • Direct Foremen on productivity issues and monitor the work performance, working with the Foreman and crews to overcome challenges.
  • Follow project plans and budget while ensuring the Superintendent, Foreman and crews perform to meet production goals.
  • Assist the Foreman to translate drawings, specifications and work requirements into a prioritized work plan.
  • Understand the scope and sequencing of work, support Superintendent to plan and prioritize the work, effectively redirect crews and equipment to assigned tasks and minimize downtime on sites.
  • Contribute to the development of a construction plan.
  • Work with the Project Director to identify equipment and labour resource requirements.
  • Work with the Project Director and Leads to periodically reassess daily goals to meet forecasted production, schedules and budgets.
  • Support an inclusive employee relationship culture, and is accountable for adherence to policies that ensure a respectful and inclusive work environment.
  • Build and maintain a strong functional team through instruction, training, coaching and team building.
  • Ensure work completed meets quality standards, that preparation and submittal of required reports, documentation and logs are completed.
  • Oversee the approval of daily production records and reporting on work progress, these include:
    • Daily quality control inspections and checklists.
    • Record and report of violations or disciplinary actions.
    • HSE inspections and reports.
    • Review Foreman records and track all rental items, ensure returns are completed and documented.
    • Project specific forms/inspections/tracking as required.
    • Approving field log each day and ensuring submittal of field log for each Foreman is completed daily.
    • Reviewing field log with the Project manager/Leads to ensure accuracy of phase codes and reported items.
  • Document reporting of and maintaining in good repair all company owned and rented tools, equipment and assets.
  • Manage Superintendent and Foremen and hold them accountable for their responsibilities in administration and quality control.

 

Required Knowledge and Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of experience managing transportation or heavy civil construction projects of similar scope and complexity, in a self-performing environment 
  • Strong understanding of construction methodologies and practices gained through on site experience
  • Well developed leadership and people management skills 
  • Experience with interchange construction; highway widening; and/or bridge construction preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of the applicable OH&S legislation.
  • Exceptional ability to multitask in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills.
  • Proficient Computer skills in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Must Maintain a valid Class 5 Drivers License.
  • Ability to work the project schedule which may include overtime, weekends and/or night shift.
