The Natural Gas Safety Advisor will play a critical role in supporting underground utility and pipeline operations by promoting a strong safety culture across all levels of the organization. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with Aecon’s Health, Safety and Environmental standards, as well as applicable OSHA and DOT pipeline safety regulations, while proactively identifying and mitigating risk in the field.

 

Working closely with crews, supervisors, and clients, the advisor will provide hands-on safety leadership through training, inspections, incident investigations, and continuous improvement initiatives to ensure work is performed safely, responsibly, and in full compliance.

 

 

What You'll Do Here:

 

  • Drive an inclusive culture to promote equity, welcome different perspectives, and enable career progression by fostering a sense of belonging.
  • Conduct Employee health and safety orientation and site-specific safety orientation to workers, owners and clients.
  • Train affected AECON employees in fall protection, confined space entry, traffic protection, traffic control person, WHMIS, respiratory protection, emergency response, etc.
  • Coordinate training such as WHMIS, First Aid, etc.
  • Conduct workplace inspections, audits, Job Assessment Risk Reviews (JARRs), Critical Component Verifications (CCVs), and behavioral observations in the workplace.
  • Develop workplace plans – such as emergency evacuations, fire emergency, traffic controls, fall protection.
  • Distribution of safety material, supplies and equipment as needed to team members.
  • Conduct safety presentations to clients and promote Aecon safety systems to potential industry clients.
  • Participate as a visitor member of Joint Health and Safety Committees.
  • Conduct studies and analyze accident trends.
  • Inspect project facilities and recommend corrective actions, & coordination of environmental issues.
  • Work with the Claims Administrator, assist with workers’ compensation claims and associated activities.
  • Develop return to work and modified work programs.
  • Perform accident/Incident investigations and track corrective actions to closure.
  • Mediate health and safety issues for resolution.
  • Prepare and assist with external safety audits.

 

 

What You Bring to the Team:

 

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience as an EHS Advisor, Field Safety Representative, or Safety Coordinator preferably in support of underground utility construction (oil & gas pipeline and natural gas) health and safety role
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations, DOT Pipeline Safety Regulations (49 CFR Part 192), Operator Qualification compliance, gas leak response procedures, damage prevention/811 compliance, excavation safety, propane plant/storage safety, emergency response coordination with fire departments.
  • Health and Safety Certification required; Construction Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) preferred
  • Working knowledge of Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) Regulations
  • CHST or CSP certification, or “in progress” is an asset.
  • Strong computer skills – MS Excel / Word.
  • Strong knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety act and Regulations for Construction Projects.
  • Strong knowledge of other Regulations, e.g. GHS (Haz COMM), Lead/Asbestos in Construction, Designated Substances, Smoking in the Workplace.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and to be proactive.
  • Be a champion of inclusion and diversity.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication with strong relationship management skills.
  • Adaptable to flexible work schedule when required to meet deadlines.
  • Valid driver’s license.
