What is the Opportunity?
As part of an alliance agreement, Aecon has been awarded a contract in an Aecon-led partnership with Kiewit Nuclear Canada by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for the execution phase on the Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP) in Clarington, Ontario. Beginning in 2025, Aecon will support the Construction of the Unit 1 Small Modular Reactor at the Darlington site.
Reporting to the General Superintendent, the Tunnel Superintendent is responsible for the overall supervisory responsibility for planning, coordinating and reviewing all tunnel excavations, installation of tunnel lining, grouting, and monitoring data and protection of building structures, surface facilities and subsurface utility infrastructure. They are directly responsible for, although not limited to, ensuring the safety of crew members, ensuring the productivity of crew members, following health and safety legislation and Company policies, procedures, and guidelines.
What You'll Do Here:
- Overall supervisory responsibility for planning, coordinating and reviewing all tunnel excavations, installation of tunnel lining, grouting, and monitoring data and protection of building structures, surface facilities and subsurface utility infrastructure.
- Responsible for the safety, quality, and timely completion of the tunnel, in conformance with Project Requirements.
- Assisting designers in developing the best solution for tunnel works that the company is pursuing in terms of constructability.
- Responsible for the timely completion and submittal of construction records.
- Development and implementation of procedures, work plans and shop drawings, and overseeing remedial measures when specified limits are approached or exceeded
- Being present in the Mined Tunnel throughout each shift, leading tunnelling activities
- Coordination with the Mined Tunnel Project Engineers, other Mined Tunnel Superintendents, and the Client (as required)
- Ensuring tunnel equipment operators, mechanics and crews are certified through records of training that the staff are prepared and equipped to operate equipment and/or install all support measures and linings required for the Tunnel
- Coordinating and providing direction to tunnel Surveyors
- Coordinating with Mined Tunnel Instrumentation Specialist
- Responsible for job-site operations, as assigned, including onsite activities of the Joint Venture, subcontractors, suppliers, clients and their representatives and others as may be assigned within the area of responsibility.
- Coordinate the layout of temporary construction facilities for the project
- Overall responsibility for craft worker safety on the project in accordance with the Joint Venture-established Zero Accidents safety program
- Ensures the quality of work performed meets requirements.
- Review the project design to identify potential changes that will improve the constructability of the work.
- Identify construction critical items that have the potential of impacting the work cost or schedule.
- Implement Progress Reporting process
- Control job-site expenditures, in the assigned area, for labour, equipment, material and services
- Monitor construction equipment utilization and maintenance
- Monitor tool usage at the site. Approve Field Materials Requisitions for tools and consumables, and ensure that the crafts have the tools they require to be productive
- Develop forecast labour unit rates, field distributable rates and construction equipment requirements for the project
- Responsible for craft jurisdictional assignments in accordance with the Labour Agreement
- Responsible for overall supervision of all personnel in the assigned area of responsibility
- On a large job, coordinates multi-discipline craft activities within a specific area of the project, or all related crafts of a single discipline covering one or more areas of the project. On a medium job, coordinates and directs construction installation activities for all disciplines in an area.
- Provides technical and administrative direction to Tunnel Equipment Operators, Labourers, Surveyors, Electricians, construction engineers, coordinators, administrators and others, as assigned.
- Responsible for the overall planning and scheduling to ensure that the project is constructed in a timely and cost-effective manner.
- Coordinates and monitors the three main functions – Administration, Engineering and Construction.
- Ensure that contracts are kept current and are being updated with change orders regularly.
- Ensures that all functions and operations on the job comply with local legislative requirements.
- Ensures that Company policies and project procedures are being adhered to.
- Ensures compliance with union agreements, if applicable.
- Reviews and provides approval of project cost reports and ensures projected job profits are accurate and current.
- Maintain a good working relationship with customers, consultants and subcontractors.
- Supervise and mentor technicians and engineers on site.
- Hire and supervise the activities of subcontractors
- Recruit, hire and supervise staff
- Perform additional assignments per the Project Manager’s direction
- Develop and implement quality control programs
- Establish and implement policies and procedures for quality control
- Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate daily operations
- Prepare reports
What You Bring to the Team:
- 10+ years’ construction experience
- 5 years’ tunnelling experience required, including hard rock & soft rock tunnelling
- 3 years’ supervisory experience overseeing tunnelling teams
- Demonstrated leadership in a team-based environment
- Previous experience managing multiple work sites at once
- 2-3 years’ experience working with tunnel boring machines
- Strong verbal and written skills are essential
- 2-3 years’ experience planning, coordinating and reviewing all tunnel excavations
- 2-3 years’ experience maneuvering tunnels around building structures, surface facilities and subsurface utility infrastructure
- 1-2 years’ experience working on the construction of LRT projects
- Effective time-management
- Excellent written and oral communication skills required
- Must be able to speak, read and write English
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Must be able to read and understand construction drawings and specifications
- Ability to maintain organization and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
- Previous experience working in joint venture environments

Pay Range: $140,000 - $180,000
Individual pay is determined based on several factors, including work location, education, experience, unique skills and job conditions. Other considerations may include certifications, specialized training, and the complexity or scope of the role.
