What is the Opportunity?

As part of an alliance agreement, Aecon has been awarded a contract in an Aecon-led partnership with Kiewit Nuclear Canada by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for the execution phase on the Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP) located in Clarington, Ontario. With the DNNP project in full execution, this role is to support the on-going Construction of all 4 Small Modular Reactor at the Darlington site.

Functionally reporting to the Sr. Weld Program Manager and to the Construction Director on a project reporting line, the Welding Program Manager will lead and assist in the planning, organization, control, integration and completion of works related to all site welding scopes (ie. reactor building, piping, reactor pressure vessel). The Weld Program Manager has the overall responsibility for adherence of Aecon’s QAM for welding activities on site.

 

What You'll Do Here:

  • This is role based full time at DNNP site
  • Scheduling of technical welding team activities (ie pre-process qualification planning) and representing the welding technical team both internally and externally
  • Strong weld process implementation skills (ie how to transfer a welder process from the lab/booth to the field effectively)
  • Participate and lead constructability meetings with technical and construction teams to support on-going site construction activities
  • Welding related technical trouble shooting management skills and abilities
  • Management of welding team (Etechs, Weld Specialists, Weld Engineers, Trainers) and specialized weld tooling
  • Collaboration with engineers, technologists, and trades people with ONE Team approach
  • Ensuring all work is performed in accordance with Aecon Red Book Safety requirements
  • Conducting technical reviews of Requests for Quotation (RFQ), Requests for Proposals (RFP) and contract specification and drawings for welding requirements
  • Interpreting drawings, codes, standards, and procedures, and summarizing for project personnel
  • Determining welding processes and weld consumables and selecting weld procedures and equipment based on the specifications, properties, and characteristics of base metals
  • Certifying WPS and PQRs and registering with regulatory bodies
  • Preparing Heat Treatment Instructions
  • Maintaining records of WPSs, PQRs, Heat Treatment Instructions and welders’ tickets, qualifications, and welding continuity
  • Reviewing fabrication drawings and determining joint configurations and weld symbols
  • Preparing requisitions and Aecon Technical Specifications for the purchase of weld consumables and selecting appropriate Special Purchasing Instructions
  • Organizing and leading team meetings and advising on design, construction, and fabrication issues
  • Disposition and facilitate resolution of welding related NCRs and ACERs
  • Reviewing and implementing OPEX’s from other project sites
  • Staying current with and introducing new technologies
  • Travel domestically and internationally on an as-needed basis (low frequency)
  • Liaise with Aecon’s Welding Center of Excellence as needed to support on-site installation welding activities
  • Make recommendations for continuous improvement of welding innovation at Aecon Nuclear
  • As needed, provides and ensures effectiveness of the liaison function between the designer and construction teams in terms of information flow and problem resolution
  • ALWAYS maintain highest standard of final product quality

 

  

What You Bring to the Table:

  • Minimum 15 years of manufacturing, fabrication or construction in similar industry: Nuclear, heavy construction/fabrication, ship building, aerospace, military
  • Minimum of 5 years of welding/program management
  • Post secondary education in a Welding Technology or equivalent (ie. 3 year college diploma in Welding Technology) or University degree in mechanical engineering or welding is an asset.
  • Certification as a CWB Welding Engineer or Supervisor would be an asset
  • Red seal trades background is an asset
  • Expert working knowledge of ASME Codes Section I, Section II, Section III Division 1/2, Section VIII Division 1, Section IX, CWB W47.1 and CSA W59, CSA N285, N286 and B51, AWS D1.1/D1.6, ASME B31.1 and ASME B31.3.
  • Expert knowledge of engineering materials and welding metallurgy.
  • Strong working knowledge of VT/MT/PT/RT and UT/PAUT NDE methods
  • Strong knowledge of construction and erection processes
  • Results oriented, takes ownership of tasks assigned.
  • Strong written, verbal communication and problem-solving skills
  • Working knowledge with MS based computer applications
  • Strong understanding of union environment
  • EPC project experience is a major asset
  • Proven ability to manage, coordinate and prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced, high pressure, highly professional environment to meet tight deadlines in a project/construction setting
  • Organizational and time management skills. Ability to prioritize and multi-task / service orientated
  • Ability to travel domestically/internationally on short notice
  • Ability to obtain nuclear security clearance

Compensation

Salary Range: $125,000 – $175,000 per year

Individual compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors, including work location, education, experience, specialized skills, certifications, training, and the complexity and scope of the role.
