What is the Opportunity?
As part of an alliance agreement, Aecon has been awarded a contract in an Aecon-led partnership with Kiewit Nuclear Canada by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for the execution phase on the Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP) in Clarington, Ontario. Beginning in 2025 Aecon will support the Construction of the Unit 1 Small Modular Reactor at the Darlington site.
This position will report directly to the Project Director and will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing all tunneling activities, including Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) operations, site support, and logistics. This role ensures compliance with safety standards, quality requirements, and project schedules while managing multidisciplinary teams and subcontractors.
What You’ll Do Here:
- Oversee the team managing all temporary structures linked to TBM assembly and launch (TBM shield cradle, TBM back up cradle, thrust frame, etc.)
- Develop tunneling work plans, schedules, and resource allocation strategies.
- Oversee TBM operations, including assembly, launch, and maintenance.
- Ensure alignment with geotechnical conditions and design specifications.
- Enforce strict adherence to safety protocols and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct toolbox talks, hazard assessments, and safe work reviews.
- Provide mentorship and performance management for team members.
- Implement QA/QC programs for tunneling works, including ring building and grout injection.
- Monitor ground conditions and ensure proper installation of support systems.
- Liaise with engineering, logistics, and surface works teams.
- Maintain accurate progress reports, shift logs, and production metrics.
- Escalate safety or quality issues promptly.
What You Bring to the Team:
- A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field.
- 10 years in tunneling or underground construction, including TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) operations and tunnel cross-passages experience.
- Minimum 10 years’ relevant supervisory experience on large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Minimum 5 years’ mining experience, with the knowledge of TBM and mining systems.
- Experience with developing methodologies to ensure compliance with the scope of work and technical criteria.
- Self-directed, motivated team player who thrives in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent computer skills.
- Strong coordination and organization skills, with strict emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written, with all internal organization departments, alliance partners, subcontractors, and regulatory authorities.
- Comfortable working in both settings, in-office and on-site.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
