Our Construction segment includes all aspects of the construction of both public and private infrastructure in the Civil, Urban Transportation, Nuclear, Utility, and Conventional Industrial sectors. We operate primarily in Canada but selectively pursue International initiatives.

 

At Aecon, people are at the heart of everything we do. Aecon is focused on identifying, attracting and hiring a talented EHS Claims Specialist to support our western operations.

 

Reporting to the Vice President, EHS & Safety, the EHS Claims Specialist will be a resource for the company and provide stewardship on wellness initiatives and overall claims management.  This role will work with the operational EHS teams to support all aspects of incident reporting, reporting to provincial worker’s compensation boards and claims management activities. The incumbent will be responsible for supporting worker’s compensation activities in all provinces when necessary.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure adherence to Aecon incident reporting guidelines and policies
  • Ensure all injury related incidents are entered into the Aecon Incident Management System (EHS Documentation System) as per reporting guidelines and policies.
  • Review all accident and claims packages that are submitted to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Advise/Assist EHS Advisors and Directors regarding new events to mitigate any potential claim issues
  • Ensure provincial workers compensation board reporting requirements are met
  • Monitor all open claims until closure. 
  • Work with EHS Advisors and Provincial Compensation boards
  • Respond to all board correspondence and phone calls
  • Maintain telephone contact with provincial boards on an ongoing basis
  • Follow up with EHS advisors to routinely monitor injured workers status, recommend strategies and identify any barriers.
  • Review all functional ability forms, medical reports, diagnostic reports and notes as they relate to claims strategy and Aecon obligations
  • Advise and consult with EHS Advisors regarding any medical or claim related questions or concerns
  • Advise EHS team on Provincial Workers Compensation Policies
  • Update EHS Documentation System events on regular basis and to ensure they are accurate and up to date
  • Handle all Occupational Disease claims and hearing loss reports
  • Early and Safe Return to Work: Review and advise on modified work offers and plans, review modified work logs and ensure all events are updated. Arrange and attend return to work meetings with regional EHS teams. Work with EHS teams to manage and eliminate any barriers to return to work.
  • Assist with all appeals in the assigned geographical area – case review, case letters, mediation, appeal hearings etc.
  • Support EHS Documentation System configuration and programming to update/add/change/edit as required to ensure it remains accurate and relevant to Aecon operations
  • Monitor workers compensation accounts to ensure accuracy and mitigate claims costs
  • Register or modify existing WSIB/WCB accounts as required
  • Establish a network of clinics and medical services in regions where Aecon is active to assist in managing the return to work practice
  • Participate in training to support communication of Aecon Return to Work programs with our supervisors and management
  • Review Aecon EHS Policy and Program (Redbook) and recommend any additions or revisions to occupational health and return to work programs.
  • Coordinate with site medical facilities to ensure consistent application of the Aecon EHS program
  • Prepare reports and summaries of workers compensation related information for Sr. management
  • Develop customized training as it is related to new occupational health and safety policies or procedures
  • Provide EHS training to Aecon staff as needed
  • Initiate and oversee various health and safety initiatives for injury prevention

 

Required Knowledge and Experience

  • 3-5 years’ experience in disability management related activities is an asset
  • Preference will be given to those holding a professional health care designation (RN, RPN, OT, PT)
  • A post-secondary degree/diploma/certificate in disability management or related field considered an asset
  • Able to work in a fast-paced team environment
  • Experience with WSIB/WCB claims, appeals and processes is a strong asset.
  • Ability to use MS Office software and various programs to support the incident database
  • Work with a sense of urgency by demonstrating the ability to shift priorities to accomplish objectives
  • Effectively manage time to keep commitments to both internal and external clients
  • Communication – excellent ability to clearly and effectively communicate information and clarify requirements both orally and in writing.
  • Previous experience in the construction industry is a strong asset
