- Champion a strong safety culture and hold leaders accountable for performance.
- Promote a culture where employees are empowered and expected to stop unsafe work.
- Ensure compliance with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety requirements and company policies.
- Review significant incidents, near misses, and corrective action plans.
- Integrate safety into planning, estimating, scheduling, and project execution.
- Provide overall leadership and direction for roadway construction operations.
- Establish annual and long-term operational objectives aligned with company strategy.
- Oversee successful execution of multiple construction projects simultaneously.
- Ensure appropriate resources, equipment, labour, materials, and subcontractors are available.
- Monitor project performance and intervene when schedule, cost, quality, or resource challenges arise.
- Establish standardized operational processes, best practices, and accountability.
- Maintain overall accountability for profitability and financial performance of the business unit.
- Review project financials, budgets, forecasts, cost-to-complete, productivity, and margins.
- Monitor revenue, gross margin, overhead, utilization, and operating results.
- Develop and manage annual operating budgets and identify corrective actions.
- Drive continuous improvement in productivity, cost control, and project profitability.
- Provide oversight of major and high-risk projects from bid through completion.
- Ensure Senior/Project Managers and Operational Managers maintain strong project controls.
- Review schedules, budgets, forecasts, manpower requirements, and production targets.
- Support resolution of significant contractual, client, subcontractor, and operational issues.
- Ensure project closeout, financial reconciliation, and recovery of outstanding claims/change orders.
- Provide strategic direction to estimating and business development.
- Identify and pursue opportunities aligned with company capabilities and objectives.
- Review major bids and provide input on pricing, risk, production assumptions, equipment, labour, and subcontracting.
- Develop relationships with municipalities, developers, general contractors, consultants, and suppliers.
- Monitor market conditions, competitors, infrastructure opportunities, and profitable backlog.
- Lead, mentor, and develop the team.
- Recruit and retain high-performing construction professionals.
- Establish performance expectations, succession plans, and leadership development.
- Support employee engagement, retention, and professional development.
- Work with HR on workforce planning, compensation, employee relations, and organizational development.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with key clients and stakeholders.
- Act as senior company representative for major projects and strategic accounts.
- Resolve escalated client concerns and contractual issues.
- Participate in major client meetings, negotiations, and project reviews.
- Establish expectations for quality and project execution.
- Ensure construction activities meet contractual specifications and company standards.
- Identify opportunities to improve productivity, processes, and project delivery.
- Implement KPIs, operational reporting, and lessons learned.
- 10+ years of progressive leadership experience within construction and/or post-secondary education in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Business Administration, or a related discipline preferred.
- P.Eng., Gold Seal, PMP, CET, or equivalent designation is an asset.
- Significant roadway, civil, earthworks, underground utilities, grading, paving, aggregates/base construction, or heavy civil experience.
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects and operational teams.
- Proven project financial management and profitability experience.
- Strong understanding of construction contracts, estimating, scheduling, project controls, and risk management.
- Strong knowledge of Alberta construction practices and regulatory requirements.
