Junior Estimator

Reporting to the Senior Estimator, the Junior Estimator will primarily complete quantity take-offs and conceptual estimating and provide support with budgets and cost analyses. This role will analyze project plans and specifications to determine the overall estimated cost of a project in the pre-construction phase. The ideal candidate will have previous experience in construction, be organized, motivated, detail-orientated and driven.


Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately interpret and comprehend tender drawings and specifications for all projects.
  • Present all aspects of the project scope, staging, timing, constraints, risks, and potential cost saving opportunities and alternatives to internal staff.
  • Perform and/or direct quantity take-offs from tender drawings.
  • Prepare initial tender schedule for handoff to field staff.
  • Consistently and insightfully formulate all tender costs—labour, material, equipment, and procure subcontractor scope and costs—for quotation submission.
  • Close tenders—including tender reviews and sub-proposal reviews and analysis.
  • Accountable for accuracy of tender submissions.
  • Prepare bid bond and insurance request forms.
  • Maintain files and correspondence on active tenders.
  • Customer follow-up on submitted tenders/proposals.
  • Cost out potential scope of work changes/additional cost/claims situations.
  • Provide technical support to field staff.
  • Communicate with field staff and Clients.


Required Knowledge and Experience

  • Degree or diploma in construction management, estimating or engineering or other related discipline.
  • 1-3 years’ experience in civil estimating within the construction industry.
  • Knowledge of road paving and the construction industry is an asset.
  • Strong capability of reading through the tender documents and project specifications and prepare summary.
  • Capable of reading and understanding construction drawings and documents.
  • Experience working with spreadsheets, databases, estimating packages, take-off packages, and scheduling packages.
  • Strong team and communication skills—reading, writing, and oral skills.
  • Strong Computer proficiency – Experience with Hard Dollar and SAP is considered and asset.
  • Ability to work accurately under pressure.
