Position Overview 

Aecon Industrial brings seamless solutions to key clients through operational excellence and reliability. With the ability to self-perform across our diverse business offering and a strategic fabrication network, Aecon Industrial proactively and profitably manages projects across a diverse range of industrial business areas.  (Renewable Energy, Natural Gas Distribution, Oil and Gas, Water, Mining, Cogeneration Energy, Chemical, etc.). 

 

Reporting to the Project Controls Manager, the Project Controls Specialist will be responsible for providing project controls support to ongoing projects and supporting the estimating and construction teams to ensure that the company’s project controls system is properly implemented and utilized.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Controls Systems and Tools
  • Provides project control support (communication, training) to estimating and construction teams to ensure project controls systems are properly implemented and utilized on the project.
  • Participates in developing, establishing and maintaining project cost / control systems.
  • Assists with evaluating and documenting processes and procedures to be followed by project teams.
  • Provides input on an ongoing basis for improvements/modifications to Aecon’s project controls policy and guidelines.
  • Project Setup 
  • Provides support in the review of tenders, proposals and contracts to ensure all commercial terms and project controls reporting requirements (ie. Invoicing, reporting) are fulfilled during project setup.
  • Participates in proposal and estimating efforts to ensure continuity between project estimates and project controls requirements.
  • Assists the project team in setting up the project WBS, project cost codes and project baseline budget. 
  • Scheduling
  • Provides input into the production of a detailed, resource-loaded project schedule. 
  • Progress and Cost Tracking
  • Generates all required project status and forecast reporting for management and client requirements.
  • Reviews and analyzes reporting (i.e. progress, productivity, scheduling, costs, revenues, margin) with Lead or Manager as well as the project team, suggesting corrective actions to maintain expected performance and productivity).
  • Provides support to project team to ensure understanding and proper use / implementation of the project cost structure.
  • Prepares and updates project cash flows as required throughout the project life-cycle.
  • Scope and Change Management
  • Supports the establishment of a change management system in compliance with contract conditions and Aecon’s procedures.
  • Provides support to project team on implementing and maintaining the prescribed change management procedures.
  • Risk Management
  • Identifies opportunities of improvement for management review and consideration.
  • People Management
  • May be accountable for training and/or mentoring junior project controls staff. 
  • Communication
  • Collaborates with Estimators, Project Managers, Finance, Operations teams and Management teams.
  • Communicates with external clients, client groups and partners, vendors and subcontractors as required.
  • Drives an inclusive culture to promote equity, welcome different perspectives, and enable career progression by fostering a sense of belonging.

 

Required Knowledge and Experience

  • College and/or Undergraduate Degree in Business or Engineering, or equivalent. 
  • 5-10 years of related construction industry experience.
  • Applied knowledge and experience in Project Management and Project Controls principles, including: “Earned Value Management” principles.
  • Ability to produce, read and manipulate schedules and scheduling curves/reports.
  • Cost engineering/cost control.
  • Proven strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to proactively identify issues / risks and suggest corrective actions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to lead project controls update meetings and to clearly identify and articulate issues to project and management teams. 
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of management and employees.
  • Willingness for continuous learning and advancement of technical knowledge.
  • Detail oriented and customer focused.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of SAP and required project controls software which may include Primavera, Hard Dollar, Accubid.
