What is the Opportunity?
The Chief Estimator is responsible for leading the estimating function for U.S Aecon’s nuclear Estimating business unit, ensuring the development of accurate, competitive, and comprehensive project cost estimates. This role provides strategic direction, oversight, and execution of all estimating activities, aligning with Aecon’s corporate objectives and growth strategy.
The Chief Estimator oversees estimating teams, drives consistency and excellence in estimating practices, and ensures projects are properly costed across a range of complex, high-risk nuclear construction projects. This position plays a critical role in supporting business development, risk management, and operational success while reinforcing Aecon’s commitment to safety, quality, and performance.
What You’ll Do Here:
- Develop and implement estimating strategies to support Aecon’s nuclear business growth and strategic objectives
- Lead the preparation, review, and approval of all project estimates within the business unit
- Ensure estimates are accurate, competitive, and aligned with project scope, risks, and execution strategies
- Establish and maintain standardized estimating procedures, tools, and best practices
- Participate in long-term strategic planning and support business development initiatives
- Accountable for the development and execution of the annual business plan for the estimating function
- Provide overall fiscal planning and forecasting related to estimating activities
- Ensure alignment between estimating outputs and operational/project execution plans
- Lead, manage, and develop a high-performing estimating team, including hiring, training, mentoring, and performance management
- Ensure appropriate staffing levels, skillsets, and resource allocation across estimating teams
- Oversee risk identification, pricing strategies, and contingency development within estimates
- Ensure alignment with contract requirements, including Design-Build and Public-Private Partnership (P3) project structures
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, procurement, and commercial teams to ensure integrated project planning
- Influence, motivate, and inform employees regarding business unit plans, priorities, and performance
- Serve as a key advisor to senior leadership on estimating, cost trends, and market conditions
- Partner with internal stakeholders to ensure alignment between estimating, operations, and strategic objectives
- Champion Aecon’s safety culture by promoting and ensuring adherence to all safety standards and practices
- Integrate safety considerations into estimating processes and project planning
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, particularly within the nuclear construction sector
What You Bring to the Team:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum of 15 years of civil construction experience, with significant experience in estimating leadership roles
- Strong experience in large-scale, complex construction projects, preferably within nuclear or highly regulated environments
- Demonstrated experience with multiple contract delivery models, including Design-Build and Public-Private Partnerships (P3)
- Deep understanding of construction methodologies, cost structures, and risk management practices
- Proven leadership experience managing and developing high-performing teams
- Strong financial acumen and ability to align estimating outputs with business objectives
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills
- Familiarity with nuclear regulatory requirements, quality assurance standards, and compliance frameworks
- Strong strategic thinking and decision-making capabilities
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-stakes project environment
- Proven ability to influence senior leadership and drive organizational alignment
