What is the Opportunity?

Reporting to the Director, Tax, the US Tax Specialist is responsible for managing US sales and use tax compliance activities, including filings, audits, registrations, and tax reporting requirements across Aecon’s US operations. This role partners with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with evolving tax regulations, support tax reporting requirements, and drive continuous improvements in tax processes and controls.

 

What You'll Do Here:

  • Ensure compliance with US federal, state, and local tax regulations by preparing and filing required sales and use tax returns and remittances accurately and on time.
  • Prepare and maintain US sales and use tax filings for Aecon's US entities.
  • Manage and maintain state and local tax registrations to ensure ongoing compliance requirements are met.
  • Support state sales and use tax audits by gathering documentation, responding to auditor inquiries, and presenting the company's tax positions accurately and effectively.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly tax account reconciliations and supporting analyses.
  • Maintain tax rates and jurisdictional mappings within the OneSource tax platform.
  • Assist with the collection, validation, and organization of tax data required for US corporate income tax compliance and reporting.
  • Coordinate the annual preparation and filing of IRS Form 1099 information returns.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory tax developments and assess potential impacts to the business.
  • Partner with Legal, Finance, and Operations teams on tax-related projects, process enhancements, and compliance initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, controls, and efficiencies within the tax function.
  • Serve as a resource to internal stakeholders by providing guidance on tax-related matters and helping mitigate tax risk.

 

What You Bring to the Team:

  • CPA designation (or equivalent professional accounting certification).
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in US indirect tax, sales and use tax compliance, or a related tax function.
  • Strong knowledge of US state and local tax regulations and filing requirements.
  • Experience working directly with US tax authorities and managing audit inquiries.
  • Proficiency with SAP and tax technology tools
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify root causes and recommend solutions.
  • Solid understanding of business operations, organizational structures, and the practical application of tax regulations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multiple business functions.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
