What is the Opportunity?
CanAtom, a joint venture between AtkinsRéalis and Aecon, is delivering the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station Refurbishment Project under a collaborative contract with Ontario Power Generation. The joint venture is underway to complete the retube, feeder, and boiler replacement (RFBR) of Units 5–8. Building on the successful delivery of the Darlington Refurbishment Project, the CanAtom team brings proven experience in safely executing complex nuclear projects on time and on budget to support Ontario’s clean energy future.

 

The Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Manager, reporting to the EHS Director, will be responsible for managing a team of EHS Advisors that will be engaged in the development, implementation, and auditing of the Safety Program for the Projects.

 

What You’ll Do Here:

  • Provide leadership, direction, and guidance to the EHS department and line management in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of EHS management systems and processes.
  • Oversee and develop Employee environment, health and safety orientation and Site-specific environment, health and safety orientation to workers, owners, and clients.
  • Mentor supervisors and staff on Aecon Health, Safety and Environmental Manual.
  • Ensure that such critical systems to the EHS Management System, such as FMEA, JHA’s, JARR cards, BBO’s, Inspections, and audits are completed as required on the projects.
  • Ensure effective risk mitigation plans are in place such as environmental management, emergency preparedness/response plans, communication plans, etc. are continuously developed, maintained, and implemented properly.
  • Oversee, monitor, conduct and facilitate behavioral observation in the workplace.
  • Develop and facilitate EHS presentations to clients.
  • Participate in the Joint Health and Safety Committees.
  • Ensure accidents/incidents are recognized and investigated in a timely/valued manner by providing leadership and direction in all facets of training, reporting, investigation, and analysis.
  • Provide measures of loss and risk management improvement through accident/incident trend analysis to support annual performance targets.
  • Ensure workplace risks and hazards are identified and effective mitigation strategies are developed and implemented.
  • Inspects project facilities and recommends corrective actions.
  • Work with the Environmental representative to ensure environmental risks are identified and addressed in the Environment Management Plan and the plan is executed accordingly.
  • Ensure environmental incidents and accidents are identified, reported, investigated and corrective actions are appropriately implemented.
  • Responsible for preparing pre-qualifications for potential clients.
  • Responsible for the implementation of our Sub – Contractor pre-qualification program and the pre-qualification of Sub-Contractors.
  • Make recommendations on environment and safety products for the workplace.
  • Liaise with Government agencies.
  • Represent the Joint Venture at meetings with stakeholders and other organizations on issues regarding workplace health and safety matters.
  • Prepare reports and deliver presentations to Project leadership and clients.
  • Recruit and hire EHS Advisors.
  • Provide supervision and leadership to EHS Advisors including day to day task assignment, overseeing work to ensure timely completion and meeting expectations for quality.
  • Work with Direct Reports to develop individual career development plans.

 

What You Bring to the Team:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience coordinating and managing health and safety for construction projects.
  • Previous experience in a leadership role required.
  • Knowledge of Construction projects with a solid understanding of the Occupation Health and Safety Act (“OHSA”) and other relevant regulations and legislations required.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Certificate of Recognition (COR) Auditor and National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.
  • Experience in nuclear considered an asset.
  • Understanding of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board System (WSIB) and return to work program.
  • Intermediate to advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy, excellent verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Be a champion of inclusion and diversity
  • Background in Training, Education and/or experience delivering EHS Training programs to individuals and groups is considered an asset
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent meeting and training facilitation.
  • Adaptable and flexible to an ever-changing environment.

 

What You Bring to the Table:

Pay Range:  $112,000 - $162,000
 
Individual pay is determined based on several factors, including work location, education, experience, unique skills and job conditions. Other considerations may include certifications, specialized training, and the complexity or scope of the role.
