Position Title: Estimator, Mechanical
Position Overview
Aecon, and its predecessor companies, have been actively engaged in industrial construction in Canada, and internationally, since 1967.
Under supervision of the Senior Estimator, the Mechanical Estimator is responsible for the development and preparation of cost estimates using their knowledge of construction for various industrial construction opportunities and projects. They will compile estimates requiring cost details for various items including materials, equipment, subcontractors and trade labour specific to the scope of work being quoted.
Experience with these mechanical equipment types (Oil & Gas, Mining) would be beneficial to the role:
- Compressor Related Equipment
- Boilers & HRSG
- Mining Equipment (Conveyors, Chutes, Vibratory Screens, etc.)
- Other Misceleanous Equipment
Key Responsibilities
⦁ Overall responsibility for estimate development
⦁ Supporting the lead Estimator throughout the entire Proposal development duration
⦁ Reviews and interprets project drawings and technical specifications that define project requirements.
⦁ Ability to conceptualize construction plans / methodologies that define how to construct and install various mechanical equipment / systems.
⦁ Responsible to generate accurate quantity take-offs from project drawings, specifications, BOMs, etc.
⦁ Responsible for the preparation of the required estimate details and documentation that follow internal estimating policies and procedures
⦁ Participation and understanding of both design/build and build to spec contracts
⦁ Potential to create RFQ's packages and analyze sub-trade quotations
⦁ Estimate Preparation - labour hours / headcounts, material costs; tools & equipment costs; scheduling durations; and compile bid packages for subcontractors and/or equipment suppliers
⦁ Attend Strategy, Kick-Off and estimate review meetings as required
⦁ Attend estimate approval meetings with management to review estimate details, assumptions, and risk factors
⦁ Participate in turnover meetings with the Construction Project Teams
⦁ Potentially attend walkdowns / site visits to understand project scope
⦁ Maintains deadlines during the bidding process
⦁ Utilize estimating software to compile and generate estimate information
Required Knowledge and Experience
⦁ Minimum 5 years of experience within the construction industry and/or within an estimating department. Experience with trade supervision roles (Discipine Superintendent, General Foreman, etc.) would be ideal.
⦁ Trade Certification (Boilermaker, Millwright, Ironworker, etc) would be preferred. P.Eng. / CET, or equivalent industry experience would also be considered.
⦁ Strong estimating background, preferably on industrial construction projects.
⦁ Exceptional organizational skills.
⦁ Strong communication skills – oral and written.
⦁ Good knowledge of trades, agreements and work structure.
⦁ Ability to work with computers and have a familiarity with MS Excel & Word.
