What is this Opportunity?

Aecon is seeking a seasoned Director to lead all Business Development activities for Aecon Power in the U.S. This role will be a key member of our leadership team reporting to the Vice President, Power with accountability across the U.S.

 

The incumbent for this role must be based anywhere in the U.S with the ability to travel across the country. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Leads Business Development Activities for Aecon-Power in the US, promoting Aecon’s brand in the market
  • Pursues non-nuclear, utility-scale, power generation and high-voltage infrastructure projects (including natural gas, wind, solar, battery storage, geothermal, etc.). 
  • Pursues and originate opportunities with Public and Private Utilities (including Municipalities and Cooperates), Power Authorities, Independent Power Producers, Private Owners and Developers (e.g. Data Centers Owners, Manufacturers, Heavy Industry, etc.).
  • Works in partnership with the Concessions Business Sector on Project Development opportunities, including early development phase origination activities, siting, teaming, permitting, off-take origination.
  • Collaborates with other Business Sector BD and Operational Leaders when scope requirements necessitate the involvement of more than one Business Sectors.
  • Develops and proposes Capture Strategies, Capture Plans, and Capture Teams (JV Contractors, Subcontractors, Lead Design Firm, and Subconsultants, development partners and potential investors) to Senior Leadership.  
  • Develops early partnering documentation (MOUs) to initiate development procedures
  • Maintains the Aecon-Power US Opportunity Pipeline: Build and maintain a robust opportunity pipeline of power projects across targeted geographies. Continuously monitor upcoming tenders, RFPs, and market opportunities in the power sector, along with their timelines and procurement expectations in each region. This includes tracking utility and government solicitations in priority markets (e.g. ERCOT, Western states) and positioning Aecon to participate.
  • Client & Partner Engagement: Build relationships with utilities, independent power producers, developers, and other stakeholders. Leverage industry contacts to form teaming arrangements, joint ventures, or consortia for project bids. Negotiate basic teaming agreements in coordination with legal/commercial teams.
  • Pre-Construction & Technical Insight: Apply pre-construction expertise to evaluate project viability (review technical metrics, site conditions, interconnection feasibility). Work with internal engineering and estimating teams to align proposals with client requirements.
  • Understands the ISO, RTO and electric markets in major states and regulatory environment
  • Understands and commands the overall development lifecycle for power projects including siting, overall development, financial close, execution and end of life phases.
  • In addition, on a select basis, Project & Site Origination: Proactively identify and evaluate potential project sites and early-stage development opportunities that align with Aecon’s capabilities. This involves scouting greenfield sites or partnerships (e.g. with landowners or developers) for utility-scale generation plants, assessing factors like resource availability, grid interconnection potential, and regulatory feasibility. Generate leads both for construction-only projects and for development deals, ensuring a balanced mix of near-term bids and longer-term investments.
  • Adheres to Aecon’s pursuit processes and deliverables (Gating, Pre-PRCs, PRCs, etc.) and leads internal discussions as needed with leadership.
  • Assure that Bid Teams and Proposal Resources are organized and prepared to pursue approved opportunities.
  • Establishes preferential strategic partner relationships with Construction and Engineering firms.
  • Proactively understands client strategies, objectives, programs and solicitations.
  • Understands most contract terms and assists in negotiating key terms with JV partners, subcontractors, and subconsultants. 

 

Required Knowledge and Experience

  • Extensive (approx. 20 years) overall experience in BD-related functions, with 10+ years at the Senior level
  • 5-10 years of Construction and/or Engineering experience on major projects
  • 5 years of Capture Manager experience on major power pursuits or equivalent
  • Experience with Public and Private Utilities (including Municipalities and Cooperates), Power Authorities, Independent Power Producers, Private Owners and Developers.
  • Understanding of the US Power Markets (FERC, ISOs, and RTOs)
  • Experience with due diligence and integration activities for mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures
  • Understanding multiple contract arrangements: Progressive Design Build (PDBs), Design Bid Build (DBBs), Design Build (DBs), Public Private Partnerships, Private Investment.
  • Leadership of a Business Development team
  • Crossover preconstruction team and development team experience
  • Ability to travel extensively across the U.S. - 70-80% of the time.
