Job Title - SMR Constructability SME – Electrical and Controls

 

Constructability Engineer will be reporting to the Vice President, US Operations (with matrixed accountability to the Project Director, DNNP), the SMR Constructability Specialist will have the overall responsibility for reviewing designs for the Small Modular Reactor being designed by GE-Hitachi.  The Specialist will review the designs with the express purpose of influencing the designs to improve efficiency in construction and contribute to a stronger product line with the BWRX-300 SMR plant and systems.  In addition, this role will inform and consult all Aecon sectors within the DNNP Nuclear Island, Conventional Island, Balance of Plant, and related civil scope areas. This role is paramount to successfully achieving Nuclear Division goals regarding Safety, Quality, Schedule, and Cost.

 

The position will establish strong working relationships with GEH and Atkins-Realis design teams, Engineering Leadership, and Project Leadership with all IPD partners.  The successful candidate is a person who can firmly grasp and balance design requirements, including code and regulatory demands, against constructability, construction best practices, and maintaining a graded approach to quality.

 

This position will also be responsible to represent Aecon as the preferred constructor for the FOAK SMR Project(s) with a high degree of professionalism in manner, personal appearance, work practices, and conduct. 

 

What You'll Do Here 

  • Responsible for participating in design reviews for plant systems, structures, and components within the individual’s area of expertise.
  • Where design reviews involve specific technical subjects outside of the individuals realm of expertise, others within Aecon or subject matter experts internal or external to the IPA shall be consulted.     
  • More specifically, the SMR Constructability Specialist shall:
    • Ensure all safety, quality, and contract requirements are able to be met by influencing the design of the BWRX-300 Structures, Systems, and Components. 
    • Participate in all technical and design review workshops, arriving prepared and having reviewed the material in advance whenever possible, and providing insights and comments to the design or technical team.
    • Drive resolution of comments to achieve desired results in the design for the best overall balance between codes and standards and construction efficiency.
    • Enforce a graded approach to quality that takes into account risk insights from a preliminary or final probabilistic risk analysis model
    • Escalate deviations from desired outcomes to the respective Bundle owner and/or supervisor as appropriate, up to and including the Senior Vice President of Aecon’s Nulcear Division depending on impact and significance, following a logical progression of informal and formal escalation 
    • Contribute to the construction readiness program through targeted reviews and influence.
    • Participate in Aecon’s OPEX and Lessons Learned programs
    • Research industry operating experience (OE or OPEX) for nuclear new builds and other analgous projects to add key constructability insights during reviews and comment periods

 

What You Bring To The Team

  • Minimum 15 years construction experience with a minimum of 5 years in nuclear construction with a preference to new nuclear and greenfield projects
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or an equivalent technical degree or a combination of suitable and sufficient experience and technical training
  • Sound knowledge of engineering principles and processes associated with nuclear generation facilities, specific to electrical distribution systems, electrical equipment, electrical construction, and related control systems
  • Understanding of codes of construction and Candian Codes that will apply to the BWRX-300 construction in Canada
  • Must have a detailed understanding of the importance of Quality Assurance Programs and their significance to the nuclear industry.
  • Able to learn and understand Aecon’s construction procedures and practices, including work packaging, scheduling, and scope control
  • Must have the ability to handle all difficult or sensitive matters in a confidential manner when required and a professional manner at all times
  • Excellent organizational, communication and customer relationship skills
  • Great team coordination and ‘work together’ mind set
  • Extensive knowledge of project execution and integration of Engineering Work Packages into Construction Work Packages and Field Instructions
