What is the Opportunity?

As part of an alliance agreement, Aecon Nuclear has been awarded a contract with Ontario Power Generation to support the construction of Canada’s first Small Modular Reactor on the SMR-X Project. Beginning in 2023 Aecon will support the validation phase, design, procurement, early site preparation and site mobilization scope for the Construction of the Unit 1 Small Modular Reactor at the Darlington site.

 

Reporting to the Construction Manager, this role will support work within the DNNP Nuclear Island including the Reactor Building, Control Building, Rad-waste Building and Service Buildings planning overall construction scope. During the validation phase the Superintendent will assist in the construction planning and reviews. In execution they will be responsible for the supervision, coordination, and scheduling of construction activities for multiple scopes of work in compliance with the contract and the job cost estimate and ensures all the work is completed safely to acceptable standards of quality and workmanship. The successful candidate will join a strong Nuclear Team that encompasses Safety, Quality and Diversity as the overriding priority.

 

What You'll Do Here:

  • Accountable for work planning and execution on the project including methods of construction, manpower levels, materials, tools & equipment, rentals, and work schedules.
  • Ensure alignment and partnering with the alliance partners.
  • Monitor and review Plans/Schedules and identify risks, and issues.
  • Utilize project master schedule to create detailed look ahead schedules for General Foreman.
  • Responsibility for the implementation and enforcement of safety, quality, and human performance programs.
  • Ensures that Aecon policies and project procedures are being adhered to and followed by project personnel.
  • Monitor and manage risks, develop recovery strategies when project schedule or budget are in jeopardy.
  • Assume responsibility for productivity of direct hire trade labour and subcontractors, efficient use of materials and tools & equipment and contractual performance of the project.
  • Understanding and support of applicable trade agreements.
  • Application of home company discipline policies and appropriate escalation of performance concerns to Construction Manager.
  • Ensure trades personnel complete all necessary training in areas of safety, quality assurance, technical qualifications, equipment operation and owner specified requirements.
  • Review and provide support in the creation of Construction Work Packages.
  • Ensure project is constructed in compliance with drawings, specifications, Construction Work Packages and project schedule and budget.
  • Interface with client representatives, design engineers, consultants, other contractors, etc.
  • Ensure project is constructed in accordance with QA Programs and project quality.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.
  • Perform regular field tours to check work progress and meet with project site personnel.
  • Carry out site safety inspections.
  • Participate in company-wide initiatives aimed at overall continuous improvement.

 

What You Bring to the Table:

  • Minimum of 7 years construction and subcontractor supervision experience
  • 2 years nuclear construction experience is an asset.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of construction such as; technology, equipment, methods, EPSCA trade agreements and jurisdiction, engineering, cost control, scheduling and safety requirements.
  • Experience in managing major refurbishment or complex Nuclear projects.
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings, blueprints and specifications.
  • Must have a full appreciation of the importance of Quality Assurance Programs and their significance to the nuclear industry.
  • Must understand how to support a positive Nuclear Safety Culture.
  • Be a champion of inclusion, create and foster a diverse work environment.
