What is the Opportunity?

 

Aecon Nuclear provides a full spectrum of Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) services, in addition to maintenance and manufacturing services tailored to meet the demanding requirements of the nuclear power industry. Aecon Nuclear’ s portfolio of building, refurbishing, maintaining, and decommissioning nuclear power facilities reflects a record of project success that ranges from small but essential maintenance contracts to major construction endeavors. Aecon supports clients with expert project management to the most exacting standards.

Working with our joint venture partner Atkins Realis, Aecon Nuclear has been awarded the definition phase contract with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to assist in planning the Pickering Retube, Feeder and Boiler replacement (RFBR) project. This project involves the refurbishment of four reactors and replacement of the forty eight steam generators at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station.

 

Reporting to the Construction Manager, the Work Protection Superintendent will assist in the supervision, coordination and scheduling of Work Protection/Lock Out Tag Out (WP/LOTO)related to construction activities at various sites associated with RFBR in compliance with the contract, ensuring all work is completed safely to acceptable standards of quality and workmanship, in support of Work Protection Delivery activities for the project.

 

What You’ll Do Here:

 

  • Administer and manage the Work Protection and Lock Out Tag Out (WP/LOTO) programs with strict procedural use and adherence including a high standard of record keeping.
  • Provide input and support to the Construction, Operations and Commissioning teams, in WP/LOTO mechanical and electrical isolations, WP/LOTO test procedures and work authorizations.
  • Identify isolation boundaries based on work scope, develop WP/LOTO permits, write LOTO tags, markup engineering drawings, de-energize equipment, de-pressurize systems and implement proper LOTO devices to ensure work can be performed safely.
  • Responsible to ensure that all work is conducted in a safe manner in compliance with safety, quality and human performance policies.
  • Implement CANATOM and Client policies and project procedures as required
  • Interface and maintain relationships with client representatives, design engineers, consultants, other contractors, etc
  • Ensure the work is carried out in accordance with CANATOM Programs and project quality guidelines
  • Maintain appropriate field documentation including safety records, daily progress reports, training records, manpower reports, owner support requests, WP/LOTO governance documents, etc.
  • Provide feedback to management and supervisors in regard to employee competency as it relates to the Work Protection programs provided.
  • Develop and Participate in Work Protection training team meetings and WP/LOTO training-related projects.
  • Promote a nuclear safety culture that supports continuous improvement in the WP/LOTO management system through active communication, participation and development of skills.
  • Support project specific Work Protection management plans and procedures including; inspections, audits, observation and coaching, Worker Trades Committee and JHSC
  • Support Human Performance program activities and act as an advocate for Human Performance
  • Act as Technical resource for jurisdictional Occupational Health & Safety Acts, Regulations and applicable standards as related to WP/LOTO Programs.
  • Perform other duties as directed in support of project activities.
  • Work hours as required, including night-shift, overtime, weekends and holidays as necessary to support the project

 

What You Bring to the Team:

 

  • Education to include a technical college diploma or equivalent combination of technical training and/or related experience.
  • 10 years of previous Work Protection/LOTO experience in a Nuclear power generation or chemical manufacturing plant, 5 of which have been in Commissioning, Maintenance and/or Operations.
  • Ability to successfully supervise a composite team of Trades trained and qualified in the field of Work Protection/LOTO preparation, establishing and administration.
  • Must be able to interact professionally with Client, Contract and other Project Vendor personnel.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of construction such as; technology, equipment, methods, trade agreements and jurisdiction, engineering, cost control, scheduling and safety requirements
  • Good communication, organizational and supervisory skills are essential
  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Must be proficient in reading and understanding engineering drawings.
  • Identify lockout points using the electrical single line and three-line diagrams.
  • Identify lockout points using the mechanical & plumbing drawings.
  • Identify lockout points using power distribution panel drawings and legend.
  • Identify lockout points using the P&IDs.
  • Identify lockout / tagout procedures for project equipment and systems and write the LOTO procedure using the client’s template format.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, inspire and positively influence behaviour.
  • Experience in the Nuclear industry and with Work Protection programs considered an asset.
