What is the Opportunity?
Aecon is looking for a Director, Financial Reporting to join our Corporate Financial Reporting team. Reporting to the Vice President, Corporate Controller, the Director, Financial Reporting will lead the team responsible for the preparation of Aecon’s consolidated financial statements and related public company reporting obligations.
The incumbent will demonstrate expertise in technical accounting and accounting standards, have deep experience in financial reporting, and a track record of developing high performing teams. You are insightful, curious and take pride in producing high quality work. You possess a desire to build a high performing team and develop a winning culture.
This position plays a key role in coordinating the Company’s processes related to the month end close and consolidation of financial results, management reporting of consolidated results, external financial reporting and legal entity compliance reporting, and managing relationships with key internal and external stakeholders. This position is based out of our corporate headquarters in Toronto, Ontario.
What You Will Do Here:
- Maintain a strong internal control environment and establish accounting policies that support efficient and reliable financial reporting, and accurate consolidated financial data, The Director will work closely with other stakeholders to ensure the timely and accurate presentation of financial information to internal and external parties.
- Manage processes related to the preparation and review of quarterly and annual financial statements in accordance with IFRS, management’s discussion and analysis, and/or other regulatory disclosure documents to meet the timelines for Audit Committee / Board approval. The preparation of financial statement is required for the public company as well as various audited subsidiary companies. This role is also responsible for producing various monthly consolidated management reports and for ensuring compliance with internal controls by the team.
- You will work on complex and challenging technical issues under IFRS and provide guidance to the Operational Finance teams across all Aecon sectors in developing and maintaining accounting policies, controls and related processes for quality assurance and effective governance in financial reporting.
- Develop and maintain a framework for managing risks in the company’s financial reporting processes to ensure relevant and reliable financial information for stakeholders and regulatory compliance.
- Research and interpret new IFRS pronouncements and assess their impact on the Company's financial statements and accounting policies. Where applicable, lead the application of complex accounting standards for the Company, including writing and reviewing research and/or position papers and working with various business groups to assess underlying issues and facts.
- Develop financial policies as required to ensure the Company complies with all areas of IFRS.
- Coordinate and effectively communicate with external auditors and Aecon business units on a regular basis throughout the year to assist in managing the external audit process.
- Manage the month end close process for the head office accounting function, and coordinate the month end close process across all sectors.
- Assist in any ad hoc analysis of monthly results.
- Liaise with other corporate teams such as tax, budgeting and planning, and investor relations as required.
- Prepare standalone statutory financial statements as required.
- Lead, coach, and mentor a team of accountants.
- Other duties as assigned.
What You Bring to the Team:
- Professional accounting designation (CPA - CA, CMA, or CGA) and a post-secondary bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business.
- 10+ years of relevant experience in public accounting and/or public company external reporting experience, including the preparation of quarterly/annual documents.
- Construction industry experience is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of IFRS, including technical accounting and reporting requirements, and with multi-entity consolidations.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements applicable to public companies.
- Leadership experience with the ability to build, lead, and mentor a high performing team.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Experience working with SAP is an asset.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively across departments and across companies.
- Proven ability to problem solve, deal with uncertainty, adapt to change and drive difficult tasks to completion.
- Ability to set and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
