What is the Opportunity? 

Reporting to the Senior Director, Human Resources Operations, the incumbent is accountable for delivering full-scope business partnering services to the Operational Executive, including executive coaching, strategic planning, and driving the talent agenda.

 

What You’ll Do Here:

  • Lead and align a team of Operational HR direct reports to HR’s Strategic Intent by focusing the teams’ activities and holding each individual accountable for results.  Ensure HR activities are balanced, by requiring teams to consider operational, workforce, and risk/ environmental needs at all times.
  • Drive an inclusive culture to promote equity, welcome different perspectives, and enable career progression by fostering a sense of belonging.
  • Perform workforce planning activities including creating project mobilization/ demobilization plans, employee rotation, and succession planning, all while leveraging data and analytics to inform decisions.
  • Provide informed guidance on compensation practices (annual increases, off-cycles, STIP adjustments, etc.) within the SBU, leveraging the Total Rewards group for collaborative input.  Ensure alignment to Aecon’s overall Job Structure within the assigned SBU to maintain equity and consistency across the organization.    
  • Advise on effective training & development opportunities for employees while collaborating with the Leadership & OD group to identify opportunities to introduce new materials or offer effective development solutions to the client. 
  • Leverage Aecon’s HR programs, as appropriate, to support operational and workforce interests, ensuring operational requirements and realities are contemplated and integrated into programming.
  • Ensure data integrity is maintained within HR by auditing and reviewing talent data regularly.  Leverage HR data to improve the quality of decisions made in HR and/or the quality of people related decisions made by the client. 
  • Build strong relationships with HR counterparts on JVs to ensure ongoing collaboration and effective support of Aecon’s seconded employees.
  • Actively monitor and engage with seconded employees on JVs to ensure a strong pulse on movement, retention, and engagement of Aecon’s talent.
  • Actively participate in operational Senior Management Team meetings and engage senior leaders in dialogue on current and emerging people issues with a focus on action.
  • Maintain a pulse on workforce concerns or developments and provide pragmatic and timely solutions to address issues that impact the attainment of business objectives.
  • Facilitate regular talent reviews with operations, with a focus on action and achieving desired outcomes.
  • Ensure SBUs are engaged in HR best practices and identify opportunities to create consistency where necessary.
  • Provide feedback and coaching to HR team as well as goal-setting and guidance, using individual’s strengths to assist them in reaching their goals.
  • Collaborate and assist Aecon’s various HR project teams in achieving project milestones / objectives.
  • In partnership with the Talent Acquisition community of expertise, develop recruitment plans for the business unit, including thoughtful talent assessment/ interview practices, integration with overall workforce plans, and effective onboarding.
  • Ensures that the interests of employees and company are considered in accordance with HR policies, and applicable government laws and regulations (e.g. ESA, Human Rights Legislation).
  • Support the development of Change Management plans for various operational or HR initiatives as required.
  • Manage HR budget: monitor, estimate, and plan for future HR resource requirements.

 

What You Bring to the Team:

  • Minimum of ten years progressive professional human resources experience, including no less than three years’ experience at a management level.
  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business or related field.
  • Be a champion of inclusion and diversity.
  • Experience in nuclear, construction or related industry is preferred, with demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging industry and market trends.  
  • Experience in large, complex, and diverse operating environments.  Ability to demonstrate strong personal performance and delivery of HR solutions. 
  • Experience with working in a matrixed environment and engaging/obtaining buy-in from various stakeholders.
  • Experience with Compensation structures, job analysis and job evaluation.  
  • Comfort with and understanding of process improvement methods.
  • Demonstrated success working with complex partners, competitors, and internal/ external stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel off-site on a frequent, scheduled and ad-hoc basis.
  • Experience directly supporting a P3/EPC/Major project and an understanding of how a contractor makes money on any major projects.
  • Experience with complex legal concepts, including employment contracts, employment standards claims, independent contractor agreements.
  • Exposure to expatriate management and international mobility is highly desirable.
