As part of Aecon Utilities, Aecon Utility Engineering (AUE) is our in-house engineering division, providing specialized design, project, and quality management expertise across the full utility lifecycle. AUE partners closely with construction teams and clients to deliver value-driven engineering solutions that optimize performance, enhance reliability, and ensure compliance with all regulatory and client standards. The incumbent is joining the team to support the Hamilton LRT project.
Hamilton LRT Civil & Utilities Alliance has been selected by Metrolinx as the development partner for the Hamilton LRT Civil & Utilities Works project in Ontario. This role will report to AUE, not the Hamilton LRT Civil & Utilities Alliance. Under the alliance, Aecon is the construction partner responsible for project delivery. The Hamilton LRT will bring 14 kilometres of modern, reliable, and frequent LRT service across Hamilton’s downtown core.

The Dry Utility Modeler (3D), Utility Design, is responsible for developing, coordinating, reviewing, and maintaining accurate 3D models of underground, surface, and above-ground dry utility infrastructure, including telecommunications, electric distribution, streetlighting and related corridor assets. This role supports design coordination, clash identification, 2D drawing extraction, quantity take-offs, and model deliverables for design, permitting, and construction teams.
What You’ll Do Here:
- Develop and maintain 3D models for dry utility infrastructure which may include telecom, electrical, streetlighting, and CCTV conduit systems, utility poles, and related civil interfaces.
- Convert 2D utility design drawings, survey data, record information, and existing model inputs into accurate 3D utility models.
- Support development of combined utility models, federated models, and IFC exports for multidisciplinary coordination and client submissions.
- Participate in clash detection, model reviews, constructability reviews, and coordination meetings with design, construction, and stakeholder teams.
- Extract 2D plans, profiles, utility composite drawings, details, and model-based documentation from 3D models as required.
- Maintain modelling standards, file organization, data integrity, and quality control checks across project deliverables.
- Support quantity take-offs, construction planning, utility conflict analysis, and design change reviews related to dry utility assets.
What You Will Bring to The Team:
- Diploma, degree, or certificate in Civil Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, CAD/BIM, Geomatics, Construction Technology, or a related discipline.
- 2–5+ years of experience in 3D modelling, CAD/BIM production, utility design, civil infrastructure, transit, municipal, or dry utility coordination projects.
- Proficiency with Civil 3D and AutoCAD; experience with Revit, Navisworks, BIM 360/ACC, or other model coordination platforms is an asset.
- Working knowledge of dry utilities, including telecommunications, hydro, streetlighting, traffic/CCTV, duct banks, pole lines, utility corridors, and underground civil utility interfaces.
- Ability to interpret 2D design drawings, utility records, survey files, profiles, alignments, surfaces, and construction details.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to model accuracy.
- Effective coordination and communication with multidisciplinary project teams.
- Ability to manage priorities and meet model submission deadlines.
- Practical understanding of construction sequencing, utility conflicts, constructability, and field constraints.
- Problem-solving mindset with the ability to identify gaps, conflicts, and incomplete utility information.

The expected pay range for this role is $64,000 - $85,000 per year
Individual pay is determined based on several factors, including work location, education, experience, unique skills and job conditions. Other considerations may include certifications, specialized training, and the complexity or scope of the role.
