What is the Opportunity:

Reporting to the Director, EHS Communications, Awareness & Performance, the Specialist will play a key role in shaping internal messaging, developing compelling campaigns, and supporting a culture of safety across the organization. From drafting leader messages and newsletters to managing content on the EHS Portal, you’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure our communications are clear, timely, and aligned with Aecon’s tone and values.

 

What You’ll Do Here:

  • Write and distribute internal communications such as newsletters, EHS reports, safety announcements, leader messages, and site toolkits.
  • Support the development and execution of safety awareness campaigns, including Safety Week and quarterly initiatives.
  • Draft first versions of communications for review by the Director and/or functional leadership.
  • Collaborate with field leaders and internal stakeholders to create compelling storytelling, success stories, and campaign materials.
  • Work alongside the Digital Content Developer to translate messages into multimedia formats.
  • Manage content updates for the EHS Portal, ensuring clarity, accessibility, and alignment with company tone.
  • Track engagement metrics (e.g., portal traffic) and provide analysis and recommendations for improvement.
  • Maintain an editorial calendar and ensure communications are timely, relevant, and audience-specific.
  • Support department logistics such as material coordination, proofreading, and cross-departmental communications alignment.
  • Support ad-hoc requests from business units and safety leadership with templates, messaging, and tactical guidance.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of safety communications processes, language standards, and campaign outcomes.
  • Ensure EHS communications and awareness content and material are translated to meet the workforce needs (i.e. French/Spanish)

 

What You Bring to the Team:

  • Degree or diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Three (3) to six (6) years of experience in internal communications, awareness campaigns, or EHS-related communication.
  • Outstanding writing, editing, and storytelling skills with demonstrated ability to write for different audiences and tones.
  • Strong collaboration and stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence without authority.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with strong project management and prioritization abilities.
  • Experience with intranet platforms, communications tools, and survey or analytics dashboards.
  • Fluent in Microsoft Office: PowerPoint, Word, Excel, SharePoint.
  • Familiarity with basic graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of safety terminology, hazards, or construction/industrial settings is considered an asset.
  • French & Spanish Proficiency is a definite asset (but not a requirement).
