Reporting to the Lead Estimator, the Senior Estimator will play a key role in the development of accurate, competitive, and strategic cost estimates for complex electrical and substation projects, supporting successful bid submissions and strong project execution.
This role brings a higher level of technical expertise, leadership, and accountability, and works closely with internal stakeholders to drive financial performance and continuous improvement across the estimating function.
What You’ll Do Here:
- Lead the development of detailed and accurate estimates for electrical and substation projects, including greenfield and brownfield work.
- Review, analyze, and interpret drawings, specifications, contracts, addenda, quotations, and other bid documentation.
- Perform and/or oversee quantity take-offs during early design and from issued-for-construction drawings.
- Coordinate and evaluate pricing from Subcontractors and Suppliers, incorporating scope reviews, bid leveling, and risk assessments.
- Collaborate closely with Procurement, Operations, PMO, Finance, and Engineering to align estimate strategies with execution plans.
- Formulate full cost models for tender submissions, including labour, equipment, materials, rentals, subcontractors, indirects, risk, and contingency.
- Provide leadership and guidance to junior estimators and support estimating best practices and standardization.
- Be accountable for the accuracy, completeness, and competitiveness of assigned estimates and submissions.
- Lead Bid Closing, Bid Review, and Bid Handover meetings, ensuring clear communication of assumptions, risks, and opportunities.
- Prepare recommendations for subcontract awards and support procurement strategies as required.
- Support project setup and transition from estimate to execution, ensuring continuity of pricing logic and scope understanding.
- Track, forecast, and report on the financial performance of selected projects and support corporate forecasting efforts as needed.
- Complete Post-Bid and Post-Project Analysis, ensuring lessons learned are captured and shared.
- Provide technical and commercial support to field and project teams throughout project execution.
- Assist with Prequalification, RFQ, and RFI responses as required.
- Ensure compliance with Aecon’s risk management policies, procedures, and governance requirements.
- Foster strong relationships with Clients, Consultants, Subcontractors, and internal stakeholders.
- Support and promote Aecon’s commitment to safety, inclusion, diversity, and a culture of belonging.
- Travel to owner offices, project sites, and conduct pre-tender site visits as required (including occasional overnight travel).
- Safely navigate job sites, stairs, uneven terrain, and carry drawings and documentation as required.
What You Bring to the Team:
- Diploma, Degree, or Trade Certification in Electrical.
- Strong experience in Electrical and Substation Estimating within utilities, power, or infrastructure environments.
- Understanding of affiliated electrical systems, utility infrastructure, and associated civil works.
- Minimum 7+ years of progressive estimating experience; substation, hydro, or utility experience strongly preferred.
- Proven ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Solid understanding of contract language, commercial terms, risk allocation, bonding, and surety.
- Strong knowledge of job cost fundamentals, cost controls, and financial reporting.
- Experience with estimating software and strong proficiency in MS Excel, Word, Outlook, and MS Teams.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including client-facing discussions.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple deadlines.Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel as required.
- Professional designation considered an asset (P.Eng., C.E.T., CTech).

The expected pay range for this role is $100,000-$150,000 per year. Individual pay will be determined based on factors including work location, education, experience, technical expertise, specialized skills, and the overall scope and complexity of the role.
