Position Overview

Aecon is seeking Senior Estimators to join the Urban Transportation Systems team for current and future projects.


Reporting to the Chief Estimator, the Senior Civils Estimator will have responsibility for delivering tender estimates for Urban Transport Systems, part of the Aecon Group.


Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for accuracy of bid cost created in Hard Dollar estimating software.
  • Analyzes documents, drawings, specifications, and proposals, in preparation for pricing.
  • Visit project sites prior to price preparation.
  • Obtain input from Operations staff as appropriate.
  • Performs quantity take-off from construction drawings where applicable.
  • Supports the process to obtain pricing from suppliers and Subcontractors and incorporate into estimate.
  • Formulates costs for tender submission – labor, equipment, material, rentals, and subcontracts.
  • Good understanding of risks relevant to scope of works priced.
  • Manages the handover process upon award of project.
  • Maintains files and correspondence on active and completed tenders.
  • Contributes to project success and learning.
  • Complies with Estimating process / procedure and consistency.
  • Assists with Post Bid / Post Project Analysis completion and ensure that associated learning and communication takes place.
  • Complies with Aecon’s risk management policies and procedures.
  • Maintains positive relationships with Clients, Consultants, and key subcontractors.
  • Protects all forms of proprietary information.
  • Maintains Estimating data systems to ensure they are kept up to date.
  • Stationed on major project as required.


Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Preference will be given to candidates that possess both relevant trade experience and technical education.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive estimating experience in civils construction, or related disciplines is required.
  • Knowledge and/or experience of the rail and transit industry environment is preferred.
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines for normal functions and special assignments.
  • Attention to detail, mathematical and analytical skills, and accuracy.
  • Proficiency using MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access) is essential, experience of using estimating software is preferred. 
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with internal and external clients
  • A degree in civil engineering, or equivalent education is required.
  • On site experience with a main contractor is preferred.
  • An understanding of site conditions that impact bid costs, ensure constructability.
  • Good listening and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner.
  • Understanding of stakeholder expectations
  • An understanding of the business, and client’s priorities,
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Professional memberships are considered on asset.
  • A knowledge of various types of construction contracts (e.g. P3, Lump Sum, Cost Reimbursable, Unit Price, Target, Guaranteed Maximum Price, etc.)
  • Knowledge of industry standards, specifications, standards, contract language/Terms and Conditions/Bonding etc.
  • Understanding of the job handover process (from estimating to operations)
