As part of Aecon Utilities, Aecon Utility Engineering (AUE) is our in-house engineering division, providing specialized design, project, and quality management expertise across the full utility lifecycle. AUE partners closely with construction teams and clients to deliver value-driven engineering solutions that optimize performance, enhance reliability, and ensure compliance with all regulatory and client standards. The incumbent is joining the team to support the Hamilton LRT project.
Hamilton LRT Civil & Utilities Alliance has been selected by Metrolinx as the development partner for the Hamilton LRT Civil & Utilities Works project in Ontario. Under the alliance, Aecon is the construction partner responsible for project delivery. The Hamilton LRT will bring 14 kilometres of modern, reliable, and frequent LRT service across Hamilton’s downtown core.

Reporting to the Project Manager, the Project Designer, Utility Design, will be responsible for preparing and reviewing dry utility design drawings and calculations for the project. This role ensures the accuracy, quality, and timely delivery of design packages.
What You’ll Do Here:
- Complete moderate to complex design drawings, quantity calculations and as- built drawings for various types of utility and light rail transit (LRT) projects using various software packages (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, SPIDA Calc, PLS-CADD, IKE Office, Pull Planner and AGi32) with the support of leadership.
- Work with permit drawings, LRT corridor plans, and municipal/city regulations to understand full project scope, including rail clearances, utility conflicts, and transit authority standards.
- Apply LRT-specific design requirements including grounding and bonding, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), stray current mitigation, clearance envelopes, and integration with track, systems, and civil infrastructure.
- Collaborate with Project Engineers to ensure accuracy of drawings.
- Provide feedback on current internal design processes, tools to promote best practices, continuous improvement, and alignment with LRT project delivery standards.
- Consults with Project Engineers and Field Inspectors to problem solve complex design and field issues, including utility conflicts, clearance violations, and construction constraints in rail environments.
- Manage project schedules and deliverables with support from senior team members.
- Track quality of project deliverables and completion of projects within budget, tracking project hours and strategically staying within designated hours.
- Train Project Technicians on design fundamentals, quality expectations, and LRT-specific design considerations.
- Perform other duties as required.
What You Will Bring to The Team:
- Post-secondary education in Electrical/Civil Engineering or Architectural program.
- Minimum eight years of design experience with utility projects, specifically telecommunications, hydro, and gas.
- Substantial understanding of reviewing electrical/civil engineering drawings and site plans.
- Strong understanding of municipality standards.
- Minimum three years drafting experience using AutoCAD or MicroStation, with strong proficiency in AutoCAD including customization of scripts, tools, and menus.
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, BIM and Common Data Environment is considered an asset.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) with strong capabilities in document creation and data analysis.
- Familiarity with the CSA standards is considered a strong asset.
- Substantial understanding of reviewing electrical/civil engineering drawings and site plans.
- Excellent safety and attendance record and previously demonstrated strong safety awareness.

The expected pay range for this role is $60,000 - $90,000 per year.
Individual pay is determined based on several factors, including work location, education, experience, unique skills and job conditions. Other considerations may include certifications, specialized training, and the complexity or scope of the role.
