As part of Aecon Utilities, Aecon Utility Engineering (AUE) is our in-house engineering division, providing specialized design, project, and quality management expertise across the full utility lifecycle. AUE partners closely with construction teams and clients to deliver value-driven engineering solutions that optimize performance, enhance reliability, and ensure compliance with all regulatory and client standards. The incumbent is joining the team to support the Hamilton LRT project.
Hamilton LRT Civil & Utilities Alliance has been selected by Metrolinx as the development partner for the Hamilton LRT Civil & Utilities Works project in Ontario. Under the alliance, Aecon is the construction partner responsible for project delivery. The Hamilton LRT will bring 14 kilometres of modern, reliable, and frequent LRT service across Hamilton’s downtown core.

Reporting to the Principal Engineering Manager, the Project Engineer, Utility Design, is responsible for leading the planning, design, review, and delivery of the project. This role provides technical leadership to the design team, reviews and approves engineering drawings and deliverables, and manages project schedules and budgets. The Project Engineer ensures compliance with applicable engineering standards, contractual requirements, and client expectations.
What You’ll Do Here:
- Contribute to the planning and execution of engineering and construction programs by defining project plans, key activities, milestones, and resource requirements, including manpower.
- Provide technical guidance to design staff.
- Review and assess design drawings from dry utilities (communications and electrical), provide technical feedback, and approve finalized drawings for construction.
- Provide status report of project milestones and adjustment to schedules.
- Manage and control project expenditures to ensure alignment with approved budget constraints.
- Determine and plan project manpower requirements to support timely and efficient delivery.
- Mentor and support junior engineers and technicians, fostering professional growth and technical development.
- Support the Manager in attending and contributing to meetings as required for project reviews and achievement of design program objectives.
- Coordinate the preparation, review, and timely delivery of project deliverables, including design documents, as-built drawings, and turnover packages.
- Oversee and direct project personnel across specific phases or aspects of the project, including technical planning and execution.
- Review project designs to ensure compliance with engineering principles, applicable standards, contractual requirements, and specifications.
- Coordinate technical development activities, project scheduling, and the resolution of engineering design issues.
- Evaluate and recommend design changes, specifications, and drawing releases to support project objectives.
- Interface with clients to provide project updates, address concerns, and ensure alignment with requirements and expectations.
- Prepare and deliver status and progress reports to clients, project teams, and management.
- Actively support quality assurance initiatives by understanding, applying, and promoting established policies and procedures.
- Provide professional engineering review and sealing (stamping) of design drawings and documents, as required.
What You Will Bring to The Team:
- Post-secondary education in Electrical/Civil Engineering.
- Minimum of ten years of utility design and engineering experience.
- Professional Engineer Designation (P.Eng.) with PEO.
- Experience with utility company employment or with a consulting engineering firm considered an asset.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Experience with utility projects and transit infrastructure projects is considered and asset.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) with strong capabilities in document creation and data analysis.
- Excellent verbal, written and communication skills.
- Self-motivated, ability to learn new skills, assume new responsibilities and work cooperatively in a team environment.
- Excellent safety record and previously demonstrated strong safety awareness.
- Familiarity with the CSA standards is considered a strong asset.

- Strong understanding of municipality standards.

The expected pay range for this role is $85,000 - $115,000 per year.
Individual pay is determined based on several factors, including work location, education, experience, unique skills and job conditions. Other considerations may include certifications, specialized training, and the complexity or scope of the role.
