Position Title:  Project Engineer

Position Overview

Reporting to the Director, Design & Engineering, the Project Engineer will be responsible for managing various aspects of design, construction and project administration to ensure the efficient and profitable execution of Industrial projects. The role will involve leading, managing and accountability for project scope during FEED and the rest of the EPC lifecycle, including engineering, design, fabrication, construction, testing, installation and commissioning. The Project Engineer is responsible for ensuring effective liaison is maintained within the Engineering team and with other parties involved with the engineering/design e.g. Client, Project leads, Vendors, Subcontractors, Statutory Authorities, construction team and others.
Key Responsibilities: 

  • Work closely with the project management team to develop bid or working schedules, ensuring appropriate input from the engineering group for all the project phases.
  • Completes schedule progress updates as per defined cycles. Ensure the schedule is maintained with correct start / finish dates, updated logic and approved changes.
  • Coordinates with the engineering teams and any subconsultants, for their packages of work.
  • Attend and participate in planning meetings with the engineer to ensure that an efficient engineering design schedule and comprehensive list of deliverables is being provided, per phase of engineering design. 
  • Driving projects and scopes to be completed on time and on budget, as well as in a manner consistent with AECON Industrial and client quality standards 
  • Chairing project / scope meetings and ensuring that schedules are progressing as planned.
  • Reviewing cost control forecasts (engineering costs as well as scope costs).
  • Managing documentation and data including drawings and specifications.
  • Compiling design, fabrication and construction contract packages for implementation.
  • Monitors and supports management of Engineering and/or Construction Contractors, inspecting their work to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, and standards.
  • Coordinating field engineering, construction and commissioning with site and home office teams.
  • Manage resolution of Technical and admin issues, with/for other project stakeholders
  • Accountable for the completeness and conformance of deliverables to specific project submission requirements and checklists.
  • Ensure that all lessons learned from previous projects and those from the respective phases of the projects under their control are captured and reported
  • Prepares drafts of any Project Reports for review and issue by project manager.
  • Ensures mandatory inspections and testing is being completed and properly recorded. Providing witness services when needed.
  • Ensures Punch Lists are properly defined and resolved prior to commissioning, Start-up and Contractor demobilization, including project close-out activities.
  • Attend all project meetings and perform site surveys or walk-outs as necessary to ensure availability and accuracy of basic design information, either from surveys, 3D models or customer technical scopes of work.
  • Collate and keep up to date detailed design risk register and advise project team of risks that may affect site safety, operational safety, project profit, costs, schedules, and client relations.
  • Additional duties as required.


Required Knowledge & Experience: 

  • EPC project experience, on multi-discipline industrial brownfield projects.
  • Experience and knowledge of design safety – HAZID, HAZOP protocols and Value engineering.
  • Sound understanding of efficient Engineering design methodology & associated schedule logic.
  • Experience and understanding of 3D model and the associated design review processes.
  • Experience of Gated design process for process plant, (Front end loaded design methodology).
  • Sound understanding of engineering and construction scheduling logic.
  • Post-secondary degree / Technologist diploma in Engineering, ideally Process, Mechanical, Electrical or equivalent.
  • Proficient with the use of computers and software, including MS Office (Word, Visio, Excel).
  • Basic understanding of Primavera, schedule logic, EVM and Navisworks would be an asset.
  • Excellent verbal, written, communication and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Ability to travel across all our operating regions as required by the project – design offices, fabrication yards, and on-site delivery. 
  • Working knowledge of project controls and Change Control Processes.
  • Tolerance to ambiguity.
