Position Overview

Aecon has a rare and exciting opportunity for a Senior Human Resources Professional to join its industry leading HR team.  The Sr. Director, HR (12-Month Contract) will report directly to the Senior Vice President, HR, and play an integral role in supporting the Aecon organization, specifically within the Utilites, Industrial and Safety sectors. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and align a team of Operational HR direct reports to HR’s Strategic Intent by focusing the teams’ activities and holding each individual accountable for results.  Ensure HR activities are balanced, by requiring teams to consider operational, workforce, and risk/ environmental needs at all times
  • Support the enablement of the Safety Forward strategy in collaboration with the Chief Safety Officer.  Ensure the organizational structure and assigned talent are optimized for success in 2021 and beyond
  • Elevate the talent management and development of the Industrial workforce by working closely with sector executives.
  • Support the operations and success of the Utilities sector through collaboration with leaders, while providing support on key due diligence activities for the sector
  • Lead the continued deployment and oversight of the Aecon Women in Trades program – with a focus to expand and replicate the program to the Aecon Diversity in the Trades.
  • Deliver measured and impactful HR support to the client by understanding sector business priorities, managing employee relations effectively, supporting organization design work, effectively facilitating talent reviews and assessments, and ensuring strong talent management practices are in place across the sector
  • Facilitate workforce planning activities including project mobilization, demobilization, employee rotation, and succession planning, all while leveraging data and analytics to inform decisions.
  • Lead effective searches for executive talent within the sector.  Ensure senior talent is assessed using well defined criteria (including key competencies).  
  • Facilitate the acquisition of foreign talent as necessary to fill critical roles – ensure rigorous role clarity up front and strong candidate assessment to ensure hires’ success and integration in Canada
  • Provide informed, proactive, and thorough guidance on compensation practice within the sector, leveraging the Total Rewards group for collaborative input.  Ensure alignment to Aecon’s overall Job Structure within the sector to maintain equity and consistency across the organization.
  • Advise on effective leadership development opportunities for sector leaders while collaborating with the Leadership & OD group to identify opportunities to introduce new materials or offer effective development solutions to the client  Ensure HR teams are effectively advising clients on learning and professional development opportunities which support career growth at Aecon
  • Leverage Aecon’s HR programs, as appropriate, to support operational and workforce interests, ensuring operational requirements and realities are contemplated and integrated into programming
  • Leverage HR data to improve the quality of decisions made in HR and/or the quality of people related decisions made by the client.  Drive the continuous integrity of HR data to ensure analytics are meaningful and impactful
  • Maintain a strong pulse on evolving employment legislation, industry trends and pressures in order to effectively manage / mitigate risk for the sector and organization
  • Take an active and assertive role in representing Aecon on joint venture projects, ensuring that Aecon’s interests, relating to people and staffing, are consistently considered.  Build strong relationships with HR counterparts on JVs to ensure ongoing collaboration and effective support of Aecon’s seconded employees
  • Actively participate in operational Senior Management Team meetings and engage senior leaders in dialogue on current and emerging people issues with a focus on action
  • Support the resolution of labour relations matters including complaints, legal challenges, jurisdictional disputes, sector disputes, grievances, collective bargaining, etc. as required and appropriate

Required Knowledge and Experience

  • Fifteen years progressive professional human resources experience, including no less than five years’ experience at a leadership level  
  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources
  • Experience in construction or related industry is preferred, with demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging industry and market trends
  • Experience in large, complex, and diverse operating environments.  Ability to demonstrate strong personal performance and delivery of HR solutions 
  • Experience leading an HR Functional group, including developing and implementing enterprise-wide programs
  • Experience with working in a matrixed environment and engaging/obtaining buy-in from various stakeholders
  • Experience with public company governance is desirable 
  • Experience effectively managing due diligence and integration activities for mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures 
  • Experience with complex legal concepts, including employment contracts, employment standards claims, independent contractor agreements
  • Experience with Canadian taxation practice required, US and international tax practice experience is highly valuable
  • Experience with expatriate management and international mobility
  • Experience with Compensation structures, job analysis and job evaluation 
  • Demonstrated success working with complex partners, competitors, and internal/ external stakeholders
  • Ability to travel off-site on a frequent, scheduled and ad-hoc basis
