Reporting to the Sr Engineering Manager,  the Solar Product Manager will be a part of our Aecon Utility Engineering team and will lead the overall product engineering & delivery of our solar product portfolio. Critical to the success of this role will the incumbent’s understanding of distributed energy resources (DER) and associated technologies. This role will provide lead engineering and technical design services related to solar energy (rooftop, ground mount, off-grid applications) for residential and commercial applications.


Key Responsibilities 

  • Perform/monitor site visits, generate due diligence and fatal flaw analysis reports. Review site survey forms and photos to determine whether the proposed system can be installed.
  • Perform shading analysis and design appropriate solar system for various sites. This will entail using appropriate software and tools to choose suitable solar modules, matching inverters, appropriate structure & remaining Balance of Plant system etc.
  • Create detailed site plans, roof layouts, and electrical and structural drawings based on info from site survey forms and photos.
  • Select optimal equipment and generate procurement BOMs by working closely with Procurement, Operations and the Sales teams.
  • Where required, assess need for power evacuation and design associated equipment for interconnection with the grid/in plant self-generation.
  • Provide interconnection due diligence and perform required study calculations.
  • Maintain permitting jurisdiction and building department files and notes.
  • Generate robust preliminary design packages, including site improvements, layout, substation, one-line diagrams, loss calculations and cable schedules.
  • Plan and design PV and energy storage systems with deliverables to include permit package and instruction for install teams.
  • Partner with sales consultants to complete a preliminary design for inclusion in sales proposals.
  • Management of pre and post contract documentation system.
  • Review and respond to post-commissioning data & performance review.

Required Knowledge and Experience

  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Canada with Electrical Engineering degree.
  • Must have minimum 5 years working experience in the solar industry especially in PV design. 
  • Strong experience using computational tools used in design and specification of a PV Solar System
  • Thorough understanding of codes, governing regulations, and industry practices in Canada.
  • Experience working with DERs – battery storage, EV charging will be preferred
