Company & Position Overview
Faster.Smarter.Safer. This is how Aecon Utilities is committed to delivering projects. At Aecon Utilities, we’re committed to delivering infrastructure projects that are not only efficient and innovative but also grounded in safety and sustainability. Our mission is clear: to be the partner of choice in utility construction by driving excellence in everything we do.
As part of Aecon’s Utilities sector, the Aecon Utility Engineer (AUE) team plays a pivotal role in supporting construction through in-house engineering expertise. AUE is dedicated to enhancing project outcomes by integrating value-added quality management assurance programs that meet and exceed client expectations. We’re looking for passionate professionals who thrive in a collaborative environment and are ready to contribute to impactful projects that shape communities. If you're driven by purpose and want to be part of a team that builds with integrity and innovation, Aecon Utilities is where your career can thrive.
What is the Opportunity?
AUE is seeking a CAD Team Lead to guide a high-performing CAD team in delivering accurate, standards-compliant designs for telecommunications infrastructure projects. You'll play a key role in mentoring staff, optimizing workflows, and collaborating across departments to resolve technical challenges and ensure safe, constructible outputs. This role offers a chance to drive continuous improvement and contribute directly to the success of project initiatives.
What You'll Do Here
- Supervise and mentor CAD QC Specialists and CAD Technicians; provide day-to-day direction, coaching, and performance feedback.
- Plan and prioritize workload, assign tasks, and monitor progress to ensure on-time, high-quality deliverables across multiple programs.
- Engage with Project Managers and client representatives to clarify scope, acceptance criteria, and delivery schedules; communicate risks and mitigation plans.
- Coordinate with Design QC, Permitting, and Field/GIS teams to resolve constructability issues and data gaps (e.g., pole loads, depth of cover, utility conflicts).
- Audit CAD drawings for FTTH and coaxial builds, validating fiber routing, splice points, cable counts, ducts/micro ducts, clearances, layer standards, symbology, and annotation accuracy.
- Review municipal consent (MC), utility permits, traffic control sheets, and as-builts for completeness and conformance to client and municipal standards.
- Apply and maintain Aecon CAD standards and client-specific CAD templates; promote adoption of rules-based checks where applicable.
- Champion data integrity between CAD and GIS; ensure version control and drawing package completeness (cover pages, legends, notes, profiles, details).
- Provide advanced AutoCAD support, including layer management, sheet setup, and productivity scripts; familiarity with MicroStation, SPIDA Calc, PLS-CADD, and IKE Office is an asset.
- Develop onboarding and continuous training plans (CAD standards, QC methods, permitting nuances); coordinate cross-training with Design QC and GIS.
- Define and track QC metrics (e.g., first-pass yield, rework rate, turnaround time, drawing non-conformances), report progress to leadership.
- Standardize checklists and QC logs; recommend process and template improvements to enhance throughput and reduce variance.
- Promote a Safety Always mindset and ensure CAD outputs support safe construction (e.g., clearance notes, traffic accommodation details).
What You Bring to the Team
- 5+ years of CAD drafting experience in utilities, including 2+ years in a lead or supervisory capacity.
- Expertise in AutoCAD; familiarity with MicroStation, SPIDA Calc, PLS-CADD, and IKE Office are considered an asset.
- Working knowledge of telecommunications network design (FTTH/coax), municipal standards, CSA standards, and permitting processes.
- Experience with RFPs, RFIs, and execution of lump sum bidding requirements is a strong asset.
- Post-secondary education in Electrical/Civil Engineering, Architectural Technology, or a related discipline (asset).
- Proven leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Clear, confident communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong attention to detail and a quality-focused mindset.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Self-motivated, adaptable, and collaborative team player with a willingness to learn and take on new responsibilities.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
