Position Overview
The Technical Director will be a member of Aecon Nuclear Project Delivery Team in the development of new nuclear projects. Reporting to the Execution Strategy Director, acting as line manager for Engineering Management and Design Integration team members within the Project. The role of the Technical Director is to organize and coordinate multi-discipline engineering teams, including the supply chain, responsible for defining and documenting the strategies for the oversight of engineering design work, integrated digital delivery, to deliver fit for purpose solutions that consider construction, commissioning and operational requirements, meeting Aecon’s company legal, regulatory and project requirements. The Technical Director will be the primary interface between Engineering and the Project team.

 

What You'll Do Here:

  • Leading the development of the engineering elements of Project baseline scope, schedule and budget.
  • Ensuring the design engineering aspects of new nuclear projects are delivered and controlled efficiently and effectively to meet agreed specification, cost and schedule.
  • Ensuring solutions deliver the business case, functional specification and execution plan.
  • Ensuring all necessary documentation is generated to meet safety and legal requirements that enable receipt on nuclear licensed site, installation, commissioning and taking into service of plant and equipment.
  • Supporting license and permit applications with technical information on construction means and methods as may be required to obtain a License to Construct through the CNSC. Ensuring that all permits required to construct a new nuclear facility and related permanent and temporary facilities are obtained as required and closed when no longer needed.
  • Establishing delivery strategies for new nuclear projects that are appropriate for the application.
  • Engineering delivery and Intelligent Customer support to Design Engineering Manager.
  • Ensuring subject matter experts are appropriately and adequately engaged in a timely manner and Learning from Experience is captured, disseminated and utilised.
  • Supporting the development of effective design strategies and plans in line with the overall function and new nuclear projects strategies and plans.
  • Specifying the level of verification and validation necessary to underpin design solutions that meet the safety, engineering and operational needs (including reviews).
  • Identification and management of engineering and technical risks that affect delivery of the projects and tasks and the longer-term performance of the engineering in service through to end of life.
  • Serve as Intelligent Customer for the specification and acquisition of bought-in services. Specifying, overseeing and reviewing engineering work performed by supply chain contractors - including ensuring that the supply chain is suitably qualified and experienced.
  • Reinforcing the importance of project requirements and the nature of the new nuclear projects site and incorporating them in the delivery of engineering project work.

 

What You'll Bring to the Team:

  • Be a champion of inclusion and diversity. 
  • Engineering graduate from an accredited institution in a relevant discipline or equivalent appropriate professional qualification.
  • Relevant experience serving in a multi-discipline design team with responsibility for the delivery of design engineering packages including drawings, specifications, calculations, reports and engineering substantiation.
  • Experience of working in project teams during multiple project phases.
  • Experience of supporting project management activities with respect to design delivery activities.
  • Due to the nature of work conducted by Aecon, mandated nuclear export controls requirements must be met for employment.

 

Desirable Skills/Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng).
  • Experience of managing multi-discipline design teams.
  • Experience of Design Authority.
  • Certified by the Project Management Institute (PMP) or equivalent.
