Position Title:  Technical Field Training Specialist

Reporting to the Program Developer, Technical Training, this role is responsible for collaborating with identified Mentors and Superintendents from the utility construction yards to prepare/deliver formal/informal training plans and competency assessments to ensure field workers’ competency gaps are rectified; and proficiency levels are increased to a level deemed competent and qualified. 


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct competency assessments and evaluate tasks being performed in the field.
  • Administer technical/safety training based on learning gaps identified through the OQ/CAP programs, incident investigations, non-conformances, legislative requirements, Ministry Orders, and the introduction of new tools/equipment and/or policies/procedures.
  • Accountable for planning, scheduling, and implementing evaluations in a timely manner and developing/delivering training to unsuccessful candidates (including technical and procedural deficiencies) as required.
  • Design and build props and scenarios to enhance learning objectives and provide a forum for hands-on practical OQ/CAP evaluations. 
  • Collaborate with field operations to provide guidance for improvements regarding issues/concerns raised. 
  • Act as a subject matter advisor related to special project work, program design and development, best practice research, analysis, and recommendations to the overall strategic training plan.
  • Accountable for documenting, and inputting data into Success Factors (Learning Management System).
  • Ensuring that accurate and complete records are kept of all technical training provided.
  • Facilitate yard training meetings as required.
  • Provide content expertise in the development of training packages.
  • Provide On-the-Job coaching to front line staff.
  • Assist in the training and assessments required as part of the onboarding/orientation of new workers.
  • Assist in the investigation and analysis of new technologies (i.e., simulations, virtual realities, software programs) to be utilized for training and innovation.


Required Knowledge and Experience

  • Extensive knowledge of utility construction (Oil & Gas, Telecommunications and Power Services).
  • Knowledge of the CAN/CSA Z662, CAN/CSA 247, CAN/CSA Z245 standards an asset.
  • Electrical Engineer, Engineering Technologist or Canadian Red Seal holder for Electrician preferred.
  • Power Line Technician with Live Line Training Experience a strong asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and evaluate field workers based on tasks related to utility construction.
  • Excellent presentation and computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to administer blended learning approaches based on training needs.
  • Ability to work well safely and independently with a high regard for worker and public safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt/change to meet Company/Client requirements/needs.
  • Excellent customer focus, strong interpersonal skills and results oriented.
  • Innovative and creative outlook to assessing problems and identifying new concepts.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, planning and implementation skills.
  • Successfully builds and maintains positive working relationships where credibility is of upmost importance.
  • Demonstrates willingness and ability to travel to Aecon Utility Yards as required.
