Company & Position Overview
Faster.Smarter.Safer. This is how Aecon Utilities is committed to delivering projects. At Aecon Utilities, we’re committed to delivering infrastructure projects that are not only efficient and innovative but also grounded in safety and sustainability. Our mission is clear: to be the partner of choice in utility construction by driving excellence in everything we do.
As part of Aecon’s Utilities sector, the Aecon Utility Engineer (AUE) team plays a pivotal role in supporting construction through in-house engineering expertise. AUE is dedicated to enhancing project outcomes by integrating value-added quality management assurance programs that meet and exceed client expectations.
We’re looking for passionate professionals who thrive in a collaborative environment and are ready to contribute to impactful projects that shape communities. If you're driven by purpose and want to be part of a team that builds with integrity and innovation, Aecon Utilities is where your career can thrive.
What is the Opportunity?
AUE is seeking a Project Technician to play a key role in designing and delivering telecom infrastructure drawings that meet municipal and client standards. You'll work with AutoCAD and GIS data to produce permit-ready packages, construction sets, and as-builts, while collaborating across teams to ensure accuracy, consistency, and timely submissions.
What You'll Do Here
- Create and update telecom drawing packages (Municipal Consent/ROW, Aerial Permit, IFC, and asBuilt) in AutoCAD using AUE titleblocks and sheet standards (i.e., Conduit Plan, Cable Plan, 500/601 sheets).
- Draft plan/profile views, crosssections, details, and traffic control sketches (TTC/TMP) in accordance with municipal and client standards.
- Apply layer, line type, symbology, annotation, and plotting standards to ensure consistent, high-quality output across programs.
- Incorporate survey and Geomatics inputs (LiDAR, RTK, IKE pole audits) and client/municipal GIS data into base drawings; validate scales, coordinate systems, and references.
- Assemble complete permit packages using approved checklists (forms, fees, signatures, drawings, TTC/TMP, locates, photos) and submit through Document Control or municipal portals.
- Respond to reviewer comments, update drawings, and close CRM items ahead of resubmission; coordinate with Designers, QC, and Permitting to maintain momentum.
- Prepare clean construction issue sets (IFC) and support field redlines for timely asbuilt updates and project closeout.
- Follow internal QA/QC checklists; perform selfchecks on geometry, callouts, quantities, and titleblock metadata prior to routing for formal review.
- Maintain organized file structures, Xrefs, and version control in alignment with AUE standards.
- Leverage ABD/AUD templates and rules where applicable to support consistency and reduce rework; prepare export sets (DWG, PDF, DWF, KMZ) as required.
- Contribute to template and detail library improvements and document lessons learned to support continuous improvement.
- Familiarity with client platforms (i.e., SpatialNET) and ancillary tools (i.e., SPIDA Calc markup packages, IKE Office) is considered an asset.
What You Bring to the Team
- 1–3 years of experience producing telecom or utility drawings (FTTH, OSP, ISP); recent graduates with strong portfolios are encouraged to apply.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD with exposure to ABD/AUD, ESRI/GIS, and client platforms (i.e., SpatialNET) considered an asset.
- Understanding of municipal permitting requirements and telecom symbology; strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, SharePoint); demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and meeting deadlines.
- Post-secondary education in Electrical or Civil Engineering, or an Architectural program, is considered an asset.
Aecon fosters diversity, inclusion and belonging within and across our organization. We welcome all to apply including, women, visible minorities, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity.
