What is the opportunity: 

AUE is seeking a Engineering Trainee (Power Systems) to support the delivery of high‑quality engineering designs for high-voltage transmission lines and substations. You’ll work on design calculations, drawings, and construction packages while gaining hands‑on experience with field surveys, technical reporting, and multidisciplinary collaboration.   

 

This position requires frequent travel between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie.

 

What you’ll do here:

  • Perform design calculations and engineering drawings (both Civil and Electrical) for distribution, transmission and substation projects under the guidance of senior engineers, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and client standards.
  • Learn and utilize design software tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation including 2D/3D design platforms, SPIDA Calc, PLS CAD and others
  • Support the preparation of project schedules, cost estimates, and construction/design packages.
  • Support the development of construction packages, RFP responses, and engineering requirements.
  • Participate in site visits and field surveys to collect data and verify existing conditions.
  • Review construction practices and assist in ensuring compliance with design and code requirements.
  • Help prepare status reports, technical documentation, and deliverables for internal teams and clients.
  • Contribute to technical reports and ensure documentation accuracy throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with clients, contractors, designers, and field staff to support project coordination and delivery.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with project teams, engineering leads, and key stakeholders.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining client relationships through effective communication and follow‑through.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support engineering and project teams.
  • Ability to travel for project‑related field work when required.


What you bring to the Team:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in an electrical or civil engineering program accredited by Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) with B.Eng. or M.Eng. title

  • Strong interest in high‑voltage transmission line and substation electrical design, including grounding, protection, and system studies.

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and basic design tools (MicroStation and 3D software an asset).

  • Prior experience or Knowledge with arc‑fault analysis, grounding system studies, electrical design, or civil/structural design will be considered an asset.

  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem‑solving skills.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Proactive, eager to learn, and adaptable to changing project needs.

  • Awareness or basic training in Occupational Health and Safety. 

  • Ability to travel for site visits as required; valid driver’s license with access to vehicle preferred.

Compensation RangeThe expected salary for this position is $60,000 - 80,000 annually. Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience, and unique skills.
