What is the Opportunity?
Aecon Civil East is a leader in delivering complex infrastructure projects, including major tunneling and transportation initiatives across Canada. As we continue to grow, we are looking for a Tunnel Surveyor Lead to oversee surveying operations on our tunneling projects, ensuring precision, efficiency, and compliance with project specifications.
The Tunnel Surveyor Lead will play a critical role in managing survey activities, coordinating field teams, and providing accurate geospatial data to support construction operations. This role requires a high level of technical expertise, problem-solving ability, and leadership skills to ensure the success of tunnel excavation and related infrastructure work. We are continuously seeking top talent to build a strong pipeling for our upcoming project work.
What You’ll Do Here:
- Lead tunnel surveying operations to ensure precise alignment, elevation control, and geospatial accuracy.
- Develop and execute survey plans in collaboration with project teams to meet engineering and construction requirements.
- Utilize advanced surveying instruments, including total stations, laser scanners, GNSS, and tunnel guidance systems.
- Oversee the installation of control points, benchmarks, and reference grids for tunnel excavation and construction.
- Ensure quality control (QA/QC) of survey data, conducting checks to verify accuracy and compliance with project specifications.
- Monitor ground movement and tunnel deformation using geotechnical instruments and survey data.
- Support tunnel boring machine (TBM) operations by providing precise positioning and alignment data.
- Coordinate with engineers, construction teams, and subcontractors to resolve surveying-related issues.
- Maintain detailed survey records and reports, ensuring documentation aligns with project requirements.
- Implement safety protocols related to underground surveying and ensure compliance with occupational health and safety standards.
What You Bring to the Team:
- A Diploma or Degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional certification (e.g., C.Tech, P.Tech, or P.Surv) is an asset.
- 8+ years of experience in tunnel surveying, geospatial engineering, or a related field.
- Strong expertise in tunnel surveying methods, alignment control, and underground monitoring.
- Proficiency with surveying software and equipment, including Leica, Trimble, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and TBC.
- Hands-on experience with TBM guidance systems, shaft excavation, and drill-and-blast tunnel surveying is an asset.
- Knowledge of construction tolerances, deformation monitoring, and geotechnical data interpretation.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage field survey teams and coordinate with multiple stakeholders.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities to address surveying challenges in underground environments.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills to work with engineers, contractors, and project managers.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to work in field-based environments.
