Position Overview

SA Energy Gourp is a General Partnership between Robert B. Somerville and Aecon Utilities, a division of Aecon Construction Group.  SA Energy Group provides mainline pipeline construction services to the Canadian Oil and Gas industry.  We have a strong project backlog and our successes are well documented having constructed over 1200 km of large diameter pipeline over the past 7 years.


Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Drafter will be responsible for providing layout information to all aspects of the construction project with a high level of accuracy, ensuring the design criteria is adhered to and well documented.


This is a temporary full-time position.  The work schedule will be 6 days on (Monday – Saturday) and 1 day off (Sunday), 10-12 hours per day.  The employment term shall be dependent on the duration of the current project and future project workload.


The position will be based out of SA Energy Group’s Project Office in the Vanderhoof and Parsnip Yard, located in BC.



Key Responsibilities

  • Provide calculations to field staff.
  • Prepare 3D models for use in GPS and Machine Control applications.
  • Prepare engineering and survey plans.
  • Maintain accurate survey records, documentation and submittals.
  • Provide layout information at various stages of construction.
  • Calculate volumes using various software and methods.
  • Maintain survey equipment inventory.
  • Provide clear communication with client in a professional manner.
  • Maintain as-built records.
  • Provides back-up support for other Surveying staff.
  • Completion of design drawings, quantity calculations and as-built drawings for various types of utility projects using various software packages (e.g. AutoCAD, Microstation).
  • Assisting in field surveys using total station or GPS. Previous survey experience is considered an asset.
  • Liaises with contractors and field staff.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or required.


Required Knowledge and Experience

  • Diploma in Engineering Design and Drafting Technology from NAIT (or another accredited post-secondary institution) OR Post-secondary education in Geomatics or design field, Civil Engineering or Architectural program.
  • Knowledge of survey practices and standards.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in Drafting/calculator role.
  • Strong proficiency with AutoCAD Maps 3D, and AutoCAD Civil 3D experience.
  • Knowledge of Pipeline/Heavy Civil construction and methodology.
  • Knowledge of GIS software.
  • Ability to interpret field data and rough sketches in a fast pace setting.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, specifically pertaining to completeness and accuracy of drawings.
  • Experience with Microstation and utility projects is considered an asset.
  • Strong computer skills and proficient with Microsoft Office suite (i.e. Word, Excel).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Proven organizational skills in order to handle multiple deadlines and tasks within a high-pressure work environment.
  • Self-motivated, ability to learn new skills, assume new responsibilities and work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Excellent safety and attendance record and previously demonstrated strong safety awareness.
