Position Overview

Reporting to the Director-EHS, the EHS Lead shall be responsible for providing direction and coaching to the EHS staff and interfacing with superintendents, field engineers, quality control, project managers, joint venture partners, craft, design team, client and subcontractors.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assists management with the sourcing and hiring process for the Safety department.
  • Provides site specific safety training and orientation to workers, owners and clients.
  • Develops and trains supervisors and staff on the Health, Safety and Environmental Manual.
  • Reviews project plans and project sites before work commences, identifying safety-related risks.
  • Inspects active project sites to evaluate ongoing work conditions to guarantee compliance with Occupational Health and Safety standards.
  • Liaises with external parties such as government inspectors, sub-contractors, and general public.
  • Works with project management teams and field workers to implement and devise solutions to safety-related issues on project sites.
  • Works with senior management to create plans for emergency procedures.
  • Ensures subcontractors and employees comply with safety standards.
  • Represents Aecon at meetings with stakeholders and other organizations on issues regarding workplace health and safety matters.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge and Experience

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience coordinating and managing health and safety for heavy civil infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of Construction projects with a solid understanding of the Occupation Health and Safety Act (“OHSA”).
  • Bachelor’s degree, Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) and, Certificate of Recognition (COR) Auditor.
  • National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) is required.
  • Background in Training and/or Education and or experience delivering EHS Training programs to individuals and groups.
  • Intermediate to advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy; excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in working on heavy construction/major projects.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent meeting and training facilitation.
  • Understanding of the Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration System.
  • Understanding of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board System (WSIB) and return to work program.
  • Adaptable and flexible to an ever-changing environment.
  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record and the ability to drive to job sites.
